Like a prison without a lock ...

The Egyptians Are Struck by Terror

Solomon continues praying:

1 Your decisions are difficult to explain, and people who have not been taught have followed the wrong path. 2 For example, those lawless Egyptians thought that your chosen people were under their power. But they themselves became prisoners in their very own homes for a long, dark night, because they were not under the protection of your eternal care. 3-4 Ws 18.14-19; 2 Macc 3.25-29; 3 Macc 6.18. They thought that you had forgotten and that their secret sins were hidden behind a curtain of darkness, when gruesome creatures seemed to appear. Nowhere in their homes were they safe from the fear of terrifying noises and the frightening faces of gloomy ghosts. 5 On that miserable night, the darkness was so thick that neither flaming lamps nor bright stars could be seen. 6 And when lightning flashed, the fearsome sight was worse than the darkness.17.6 darkness: One possible meaning for the difficult Greek text of verse 6.

7 The Egyptians had depended on their magical powers and had boasted about their great wisdom, but all of this proved useless. 8 There were some who said they could cure the fears and worries of sick minds, but they themselves became sick with foolish fear. 9 Even if nothing else frightened them, they were terrified by the sounds of wild animals outside and by hissing snakes. 10 They were so frightened that they refused to open their eyes. But keeping them closed did not relieve their fears, 11 because evil people are cowards condemned by their own consciences, and whatever they fear becomes even more frightening.17.11 evil people … frightening: One possible meaning for the difficult Greek text.

12 Fear takes over when people stop reasoning. 13 They no longer think straight, and their only hope is to deny the real source of their problems. 14 Night itself is powerless, since it comes from the powerless world of the dead. And yet the Egyptians slept restlessly on that night, 15 because of the horrible and unexpected nightmares brought on by the surrender of their souls to the forces of evil. 16-17 Every one of the Egyptians—including farmers and shepherds—fell prisoner to the fear of a darkness that was more difficult to escape than iron chains. 18-19 The slightest noise made them paralyzed with fear—the songs of birds in the trees, the rhythm of rushing water, the surprising crash of a rock, the hoofbeats of animals jumping about, the roar of lions, or even an echo in the mountains.

20 Everywhere else in the world, everyone went about their own business in broad daylight, 21 while these Egyptians were covered with a heavy blanket of darkness like the darkness of death that would soon capture them. But the trouble they brought upon themselves was an even heavier burden than the darkness.

A escuridão e a coluna de fogo

1 Ó Deus, os teus julgamentos são maravilhosos e difíceis de entender; por isso as pessoas sem instrução enganam-se.

2 Quando os pagãos 17,2 Referência aos egípcios. pensavam que tinham escravizado o teu santo povo, uma noite sem fim prendeu-os, e ficaram prisioneiros da escuridão 17,2 Ver Ex 10,21–23..

Trancados dentro das suas casas, estavam longe da tua providência eterna.

3 Pensavam que se podiam esconder com os seus pecados, praticados em segredo, atrás da cortina escura do esquecimento. Cheios de medo e apavorados por fantasmas, separaram-se uns dos outros.

4 Nem mesmo as casas, onde se esconderam, podiam protegê-los do medo.

Barulhos de todos os lados espantavam-nos, e fantasmas medonhos com caras pavorosas apareciam-lhes.

5 Não havia qualquer espécie de fogo que lhes pudesse dar luz; nem mesmo a luz brilhante das estrelas podia iluminar aquela noite medonha.

6 Para eles, havia somente um fogo que os enchia de medo, um fogo que queimava por si mesmo; e quando aquela visão desaparecia, imaginavam aterrorizados que o que tinham visto era ainda mais terrível.

7 As suas artes de magia falharam completamente; a sabedoria, de que tanto se orgulhavam, deu em nada.

8 Pois aqueles que prometiam expulsar das pessoas doentes os medos e as doenças, eles mesmos foram atacados por um medo ridículo.

9 Mesmo quando não havia nada terrível para os espantar, ficavam assustados por causa dos monstros que passavam e por causa das cobras que assobiavam. Morriam de medo e não tinham coragem sequer para olhar o ar que inevitavelmente nos envolve.

10 Pois a maldade é covarde e condena-se a si mesma; os maus, cheios de remorsos, imaginam sempre que vai acontecer o pior.

11 Afinal de contas,o medo consiste em rejeitar a ajuda que a razão pode dar.

12 Quanto mais deixamos de aproveitar essa ajuda, mais terrível nos parece a causa desconhecida do nosso sofrimento.

13 Os egípcios estavam presos naquela escuridão, mas ela não tinha nenhum poder, pois vinha do fundo do impotente mundo dos mortos.

Eles dormiam o mesmo sono, 14 mas eram perseguidos por fantasmas medonhos; estavam paralisados, sem forças para se mexerem, por causa do terror que não esperavam e que caiu de repente sobre eles.

15 Cada um caía no lugar onde estava, como se estivesse numa prisão sem trancas.

16 Agricultores, pastores de ovelhas e os que faziam trabalho pesado nos campos, sobre todos caía de repente o mesmo castigo, e a mesma corrente de escuridão os prendia.

17 O assobio do vento, o canto melodioso dos pássaros nas árvores cheias de flores, o som agradável da água a correr com força, o barulho das rochas que caíam, 18 os pulos dos animais invisíveis que brincavam,  os rugidos dos animais selvagens, ou os ecos nas cavernas das montanhas, tudo isso os enchia de medo e os paralisava.

19 O resto do mundo recebia a luz brilhante do céu, e todos faziam sem dificuldade os seus trabalhos.

20 Somente os egípcios ficaram cobertos por uma escuridão pesada, que era uma imagem do mundo de escuridão que os esperava.

Mas eles eram mais pesados para si mesmos do que o peso dessa escuridão.
