I chose you to bring justice, and I am here at your side.

The Lord's Servant

1   Here is my servant!

I have made him strong. He is my chosen one; I am pleased with him.

I have given him my Spirit, and he will bring justice to the nations.

2 He won't shout or yell or call out in the streets.

3 He won't break off a bent reed or put out a dying flame, but he will make sure that justice is done.

4 He won't quit or give up until he brings justice everywhere on earth, and people in foreign nations long for his teaching.

5  I am the Lord God.

I created the heavens like an open tent above.

I made the earth and everything that grows on it.

I am the source of life for all who live on this earth, so listen to what I say.

6 I chose you to bring justice, and I am here at your side.

I selected you and sent you to bring light and my promise of hope to the nations.

7 You will give sight to the blind; you will set prisoners free from dark dungeons.

8 My name is the Lord!

I won't let idols or humans share my glory and praise.

9 Everything has happened just as I said it would; now I will announce what will happen next. 

Sing Praises to the Lord

10 Tell the whole world to sing a new song to the Lord!

Tell those who sail the ocean and those who live far away to join in the praise.

11 Tell the tribes of the desert and everyone in the mountains to celebrate and sing.

12 Let them announce his praises everywhere.

13 The Lord is marching out like an angry soldier, shouting with all his might while attacking his enemies.

The Lord Will Help His People

14 For a long time, I, the Lord, have held my temper; now I will cry out and groan like a woman giving birth.

15 I will destroy the mountains and what grows on them; I will dry up rivers and ponds.

16 I will lead the blind on roads they have never known; I will guide them on paths they have never traveled.

Their road is dark and rough, but I will give light to keep them from stumbling. This is my solemn promise.

17 Everyone who worships idols as though they were gods will be terribly ashamed.

God's People Won't Obey

18 You people are deaf and blind, but the Lord commands you to listen and to see.

19 No one is as blind or deaf as his messenger, his chosen servant, 20 who sees and hears so much, but pays no attention.

21 The Lord always does right, and so he wanted his Law to be greatly praised.

22 But his people were trapped and imprisoned in holes with no one to rescue them.

All they owned had been taken, and no one was willing to give it back.

23 Why won't his people ever learn to listen?

24 Israel sinned and refused to obey the Lord or follow his instructions.

So the Lord let us be robbed of everything we owned.

25 He was furious with us and punished our nation with the fires of war.

Still we paid no attention.

We didn't even care when we were surrounded and scorched by flames.

You have eyes but don't see... And ears but don't hear...

* 12 Their prophets lie and say,

“The Lord won't punish us.

We will have peace and plenty of food.”

13 They tell these lies in my name, so now they will be killed in war or starve to death.

14 I am the Lord God All-Powerful.

Jeremiah, I will tell you exactly what to say.

Your words will be a fire; Israel and Judah will be the fuel.

15 People of Israel, I have made my decision.

An army from a distant country will attack you. I've chosen an ancient nation, and you won't understand their language. 

16 All of them are warriors, and their arrows bring death.

17 This nation will eat your crops and livestock; they will leave no fruit on your vines or fig trees. And although you feel safe behind thick walls, your towns will be destroyed and your children killed.

Israel Refused To Worship the Lord

18 The Lord said:

Jeremiah, the enemy army won't kill everyone in Judah. 19And the people who survive will ask, “Why did the Lord our God do such terrible things to us?” Then tell them: I am the Lord, but you abandoned me and worshiped other gods in your own land.

Now you will be slaves in a foreign country.

20 Tell these things to each other, you people of Judah, you descendants of Jacob.

21   You fools! Why don't you listen when I speak? Why can't you understand

22   that you should worship me with fear and trembling? I'm the one who made the shore to hold back the ocean. Waves may crash on the beach, but they can come no farther.

23 You stubborn people have rebelled and turned your backs on me.

24 You refuse to say, “Let's worship the Lord!

He's the one who sends rain in spring and autumn and gives us a good harvest.”

25 That's why I cannot bless you!

* 26 A hunter traps birds and puts them in a cage, but some of you trap humans and make them your slaves.

27 You are evil, and you lie and cheat to make yourselves rich.

You are powerful 28 and prosperous, but you refuse to help the poor get the justice they deserve.

29 You need to be punished,  and so I will take revenge.

30 Look at the terrible things going on in this country. I am shocked! 31 Prophets give their messages in the name of a false god, my priests don't want to serve me, and you—my own people—like it this way!

But on the day of disaster, where will you turn for help?

Deus rejeita o povo de Israel

12 O povo disse que o Senhor Deus o estava enganando. Eles disseram assim:

— O Senhor não vai fazer nada. Nenhum mal vai acontecer com a gente, e não haverá nem guerra nem fome.

13-14 O povo diz que os profetas são apenas vento e que não têm nenhuma mensagem de Deus.

O Senhor, o Deus Todo-Poderoso, me disse:

— Jeremias, eu vou lhe dizer o que vai acontecer com esse povo por ter dito essas coisas. Eu farei com que as minhas palavras sejam como um fogo saindo da sua boca, Jeremias. Esse povo será como lenha, e o fogo vai queimá-lo.

15 Escute, povo de Israel, o que o Senhor diz:

— Eu, o Senhor, vou trazer de longe uma nação para atacá-los. É uma nação forte e antiga, que fala uma língua que vocês não conhecem e palavras que vocês não entendem. 16 Os soldados desse país são valentes; com as suas flechas, eles matam sem dó nem piedade. 17 Eles vão comer as colheitas e os alimentos de vocês e matar os seus filhos e filhas. Vão comer os rebanhos e o gado e devorar as frutas das suas parreiras e figueiras. E o exército deles destruirá as cidades protegidas por muralhas, em que vocês confiam.

18 — Porém eu, o Senhor, afirmo que mesmo naqueles dias não destruirei completamente o meu povo. 19 Quando perguntarem por que foi que eu fiz todas essas coisas, você, Jeremias, dirá: “Vocês abandonaram a Deus e serviram a deuses estranhos na terra de vocês; agora, servirão a estrangeiros numa terra que não é de vocês.”

Deus avisa o seu povo

20 Deus diz:

— Avisem os descendentes de Jacó, digam isto ao povo de Judá: 21 Preste atenção, povo tolo e sem juízo, vocês, que têm olhos, mas não veem, e ouvidos, mas não ouvem. 22 Eu sou Deus, o Senhor. Por que vocês não me temem? Por que não tremem na minha presença? Fui eu que pus a areia como limite do mar, um limite permanente que ele nunca pode atravessar. O mar fica bravo, mas não pode avançar; as ondas rugem, mas não podem passar. 23 Porém vocês são um povo teimoso e rebelde, que se revoltou e me abandonou. 24 Vocês não disseram no seu coração: “Precisamos temer o Senhor, nosso Deus, que faz a chuva cair no tempo certo, tanto a chuva do outono como a da primavera. Precisamos temer o Deus que todos os anos traz o tempo da colheita.” 25 Em vez disso, os seus pecados e as suas maldades afastaram essas coisas boas, e vocês não puderam aproveitá-las.

26— No meio do meu povo, existem homens maus. São como as pessoas que armam arapucas para pegar passarinhos; mas as armadilhas deles são para pegar gente. 27 Assim como uma gaiola está cheia de pássaros, também a casa deles está cheia de coisas roubadas. É por isso que são poderosos e ricos 28 e estão gordos e bem-alimentados. A maldade deles não tem limites; não defendem a causa dos órfãos, nem se importam com os direitos dos pobres.

29 — Mas eu os castigarei por causa disso e me vingarei desta nação. Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando. 30 Uma coisa horrível, espantosa está acontecendo na terra: 31 os profetas não falam a verdade, e, apoiados por eles, os sacerdotes dominam o povo. E o meu povo gosta disso. Porém o que é que eles vão fazer quando essa situação chegar ao fim?

A New Day for Jerusalem

1 Jerusalem, stand up! Shine!

Your new day is dawning. The glory of the Lord shines brightly on you.

2 The earth and its people are covered with darkness, but the glory of the Lord is shining upon you.

3 Nations and kings will come to the light of your dawning day.

Crowds Are Coming to Jerusalem 

The Lord said: 4 Open your eyes! Look around! Crowds are coming.

Your sons are on their way from distant lands; your daughters are being carried like little children.

5 When you see this, your faces will glow; your hearts will pound and swell with pride.

Treasures from across the sea and the wealth of nations will be brought to you.

6 Your country will be covered with caravans of young camels from Midian and Ephah.

The people of Sheba will bring gold and spices in praise of me, the Lord.

7 Every sheep of Kedar will come to you; rams from Nebaioth will be yours as well.

I will accept them as offerings and bring honor to my temple.

8What is that sailing by like clouds or like doves flying home?

9 On those distant islands your people are waiting for me, the Lord.

Seagoing ships lead the way to bring them home with their silver and gold.

I, the holy Lord God of Israel, do this to honor your people, so they will honor me.

Jerusalem Will Be Rebuilt

The Lord said: 1 0Jerusalem, your city walls will be rebuilt by foreigners; their rulers will become your slaves.

I punished you in my anger; now I will be kind and treat you with mercy.

11  Your gates will be open day and night to let the rulers of nations lead their people to you

with all their treasures.

12 Any nation or kingdom that refuses to serve you will be wiped out.

13 Wood from Lebanon's best trees will be brought to you — the pines, the firs, and the cypress trees.

It will be used in my temple to make beautiful the place where I rest my feet.

14  The descendants of enemies who hated and mistreated you will kneel at your feet.

They will say, “You are Zion, the city of the Lord, the holy One of Israel.”

15 You were hated and deserted, rejected by everyone. But I will make you beautiful, a city to be proud of for all time to come.

16 You will drain the wealth of kings and foreign nations.

You will know that I, the mighty Lord God of Israel, have saved and rescued you.

17 I will bring bronze and iron in place of wood and stone; in place of bronze and iron,

I will bring gold and silver.

I will appoint peace and justice as your rulers and leaders.

18 Violence, destruction, and ruin will never again be heard of within your borders.

“Victory” will be the name you give to your walls; “Praise” will be the name you give to your gates.

19  You won't need the light of the sun or the moon.

I, the Lord your God, will be your eternal light and bring you honor.

20 Your sun will never set or your moon go down.

I, the Lord, will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will come to an end.

21 Your people will live right and always own the land; they are the trees I planted to bring praise to me.

22 Even the smallest family will be a powerful nation.

I am the Lord, and when the time comes, I will quickly do all this. 

A glória do Senhor está brilhando sobre você

1 Levante-se, Jerusalém!

Que o seu rosto brilhe de alegria, pois já chegou a sua luz!

A glória do Senhor está brilhando sobre você.

2 A terra está coberta de escuridão, os povos vivem nas trevas, mas a luz do Senhor está brilhando sobre você; sobre você aparece a glória de Deus.

3 Atraídos pela sua luz, Jerusalém, os povos do mundo virão; o brilho do seu novo dia fará com que os reis cheguem até você.

4 Jerusalém, olhe em redor e veja o que está acontecendo!

Os seus filhos estão voltando, eles estão chegando!

Os seus filhos vêm de longe, as suas filhas vêm nos braços das mães. 

5 Quando você vir isso, ficará radiante de alegria; cheio de emoção, o seu coração baterá forte.

Os povos que vivem no outro lado do mar virão, trazendo todas as suas riquezas para você.

6 Os povos de Midiã e de Efa chegarão com enormes caravanas de camelos; virá também o povo de Sabá, trazendo ouro e incenso.

Todos eles anunciarão as grandes coisas que o Senhor fez.

7 De Quedar e de Nebaiote, virão carneiros que serão oferecidos no altar de Deus como sacrifícios que agradam a ele.

O Senhor fará com que o seu lindo Templo seja mais belo ainda.

8 Que navios são esses que vêm deslizando como nuvens, como pombas voltando ao pombal?

9 São navios que vêm de longe; os maiores vêm na frente, trazendo o povo de Deus de volta para o seu país.

Trazem também prata e ouro para oferecer ao Senhor, o Santo Deus de Israel, que deu a vocês, o seu povo, muita glória.

10 O Senhor diz a Jerusalém: “Estrangeiros reconstruirão as suas muralhas, e os reis deles trabalharão para você.

Eu estava irado e por isso a castiguei, mas eu a amo e tenho compaixão de você.

11 Os seus portões ficarão sempre abertos, não serão fechados nem de dia nem de noite,

para que as nações, guiadas pelos seus reis, tragam as suas riquezas para você.

12 As nações que não a servirem serão destruídas; elas serão completamente arrasadas.

13 “Cipreste, pinheiro e zimbro, que são as melhores madeiras do Líbano, serão trazidos para você a fim de tornarem ainda mais belo o meu Templo, o estrado onde descanso os meus pés.

14 Também virão os filhos dos reis que a exploraram e maltrataram e se ajoelharão em frente de você; todos os que a desprezaram virão até você e encostarão o rosto no chão.

Você será chamada de ‘Cidade do Senhor’, a ‘Sião do Santo Deus de Israel’.

15 “Nunca mais você será odiada, nunca mais será uma cidade abandonada, sem moradores;

eu farei com que você seja bela e poderosa, com que seja para sempre uma cidade alegre.

16 Nações e reis estrangeiros cuidarão de você, como a mãe que dá de mamar ao filho.

Então você ficará sabendo que eu, o Senhor, sou o seu Salvador, que eu, o Poderoso Deus de Israel, sou o seu Redentor.

17 “Em vez de bronze, eu trarei ouro para você, e prata, em vez de ferro; trarei bronze e ferro, em vez de madeira e pedras.

Farei com que a paz seja o seu rei e com que a justiça a governe.

18 Nunca mais haverá violência na sua terra; o seu país não será destruído e arrasado novamente; você chamará as suas muralhas de ‘Salvação’ e os seus portões de ‘Louvor a Deus’.

19 “Nunca mais o sol a iluminará de dia, nem a lua, de noite; pois eu, o Senhor, serei para sempre a sua luz, e a minha glória brilhará sobre você.

20 Eu serei o seu sol e a sua lua, um sol que nunca se põe, uma lua que não para de brilhar.

A minha luz brilhará sobre você para sempre, e os seus dias de luto chegarão ao fim.

21 O seu povo fará o que é direito e para sempre será dono da Terra Prometida.

Eles são a planta que eu plantei; com as minhas próprias mãos, eu os fiz para que eles mostrem a todos a minha grandeza.

22 Este punhado de gente será um povo numeroso; esta nação, tão pequena, será a mais poderosa de todas.

Eu sou o Senhor e logo, no tempo certo, farei com que isso aconteça.”

Jeremiah Complains

10 I wish I had never been born! 

I'm always in trouble with everyone in Judah.

I never lend or borrow money, but everyone curses me just the same.

11 Then the Lord replied, “I promise to protect you, and when disaster comes, even your enemies will beg you for help.”

The Enemy Cannot Be Defeated 

The Lord told me to say: 12 People of Judah, just as you can't break iron mixed with bronze, you can't defeat the enemies that will attack from the north.

13 I will give them everything you own, because you have sinned everywhere in your country.

14 My anger is a fire that cannot be put out, so I will make you slaves of your enemies in a foreign land.

Jeremiah Complains Again

15 You can see how I suffer insult after insult, all because of you, Lord.

Don't be so patient with my enemies; take revenge on them before they kill me.

16 When you spoke to me, I was glad to obey, because I belong to you, the Lord All-Powerful.

17 I don't go to parties and have a good time.

Instead, I keep to myself, because you have filled me with your anger.

18 I am badly injured and in constant pain.

Are you going to disappoint me, like a stream that goes dry in the heat of summer?

The Lord Replies

19 Then the Lord told me: Stop talking like a fool! If you turn back to me and speak my message, I will let you be my prophet once again.

I hope the people of Judah will accept what you say.

But you can ignore their threats, * 20 because I am making you strong, like a bronze wall.

They are evil and violent, but when they attack, 21 I will be there to rescue you.

I, the Lord, have spoken.

Pai, eu sou tua....

10 Eu disse:

— Como é dura a minha vida! Por que a minha mãe me pôs no mundo? Eu tenho de discutir e brigar com toda a gente desta terra. Não emprestei dinheiro, nem tomei emprestado, e mesmo assim todos me amaldiçoam. 11 Ó Senhor Deus, se eu não te servi bem e se não te pedi em favor dos meus inimigos quando estavam passando dificuldades e aflições, então que as maldições deles se cumpram. 12 Ninguém pode quebrar o ferro, especialmente o ferro do Norte, que é misturado com bronze.

13 Deus me disse:

— Jeremias, vou mandar que os inimigos carreguem as riquezas e os tesouros do meu povo como castigo pelos pecados cometidos em toda esta terra. 14 Farei com que sejam escravos dos seus inimigos, numa terra que não conhecem, pois a minha ira é como um fogo que ficará sempre queimando.

15 Então eu respondi:

— Ó Senhor, tu és que sabes. Lembra de mim e ajuda-me. Vinga-me daqueles que me perseguem. Não tenhas paciência com os meus inimigos para que eles não me matem. Lembra que é por causa de ti que eles me insultam. 16 Tu falaste comigo, e eu prestei atenção em cada palavra. Ó Senhor, Deus Todo-Poderoso, eu sou teu, e por isso as tuas palavras encheram o meu coração de alegria e de felicidade. 17 Não tenho gasto o meu tempo rindo e gozando a vida junto com outras pessoas. Por causa do trabalho pesado que me deste, fiquei sozinho e muito indignado. 18 Por que continuo a sofrer? Por que as minhas feridas doem sem parar? Por que elas não saram? Será que não posso confiar em ti? Será que és como um riacho que seca no verão?

19 O Senhor respondeu:

— Se você voltar, eu o receberei de volta, e você será meu servo de novo. Se você disser coisas que se aproveitem e não palavras inúteis, você será de novo meu profeta. O povo voltará para você, mas você não deve voltar para eles. 20 Farei com que você seja para este povo como um forte muro de bronze. Eles lutarão contra você, mas não conseguirão derrotá-lo, pois eu estarei com você para protegê-lo e salvá-lo. 21 Eu o livrarei das mãos dos perversos e o libertarei do poder dos violentos. Eu, o Senhor, falei.
