I am on your side, and I will take revenge ...

Babylon Will Be Destroyed

1 I, the Lord, am sending a wind to destroy the people of Babylonia and Babylon, its capital.

2 Foreign soldiers will come from every direction, and when the disaster is over, Babylonia will be empty and worthless.

3 I will tell these soldiers, “Attack quickly, before the Babylonians can string their bows or put on their armor.

Kill their best soldiers and destroy their army!”

4 Their troops will fall wounded in the streets of Babylon.

5 Everyone in Israel and Judah is guilty.

But I, the Lord All-Powerful, their holy God, have not abandoned them.

6 Get out of Babylon! Run for your lives! If you stay, you will be killed when I take revenge on the city and punish it for its sins.

7 Babylon was my golden cup, filled with the wine of my anger.

The nations of the world got drunk on this wine and went insane.

8 But suddenly, Babylon will fall and be destroyed.

I, the Lord, told the foreigners who lived there, “Weep for the city!

Get medicine for its wounds; maybe they will heal.”

9 The foreigners answered, “We have already tried to treat Babylon's wounds, but they would not heal. Come on, let's all go home to our own countries.

Nothing is left in Babylonia; everything is destroyed.”

10 The people of Israel said, “Tell everyone in Zion!

The Lord has taken revenge for what Babylon did to us.”

The Lord Wants Babylon Destroyed 

11 I, the Lord, want Babylon destroyed, because its army destroyed my temple.

So, you kings of Media, sharpen your arrows and pick up your shields.

12 Raise the signal flag and attack the city walls.

Post more guards.

Have soldiers watch the city and set up ambushes.

I have made plans to destroy Babylon, and nothing will stop me.

13 People of Babylon, you live along the Euphrates River and are surrounded by canals.

You are rich, but now the time has come for you to die.

14 I, the Lord All-Powerful, swear by my own life that enemy soldiers will fill your streets

like a swarm of locusts.

They will shout and celebrate their victory.

A Hymn of Praise

(Jeremiah 10.12-16)

15 God used his wisdom and power to create the earth and spread out the heavens.

16 The waters in the heavens roar at his command.

He makes clouds appear; he sends the wind from his storehouse and makes lightning flash

in the rain.

17 People who make idols are stupid!

They will be disappointed, because their false gods cannot breathe.

18 Idols are merely a joke, and when the time is right, they will be destroyed.

19 But the Lord, Israel's God, is all-powerful.

He created everything, and he chose Israel to be his very own.

God's Hammer

The Lord said:

20 Babylonia, you were my hammer; I used you to pound nations and break kingdoms, 21 to shatter cavalry and chariots, 22 as well as men and women, young and old, 23 shepherds and their flocks, farmers and their oxen, and governors and leaders.

24 But now, my people will watch, while I repay you for what you did to Zion.

25 You destroyed the nations and seem strong as a mountain, but I am your enemy.

I might even grab you and roll you off a cliff.

When I am finished, you'll only be a pile of scorched bricks.

26 Your stone blocks won't be reused for cornerstones or foundations, and I promise that forever you will be a desert.

I, the Lord, have spoken.

The Nations Will Attack Babylon 

The Lord said:

27 Signal the nations to get ready to attack. Raise a flag and blow a trumpet. Send for the armies of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz.

Choose a commander; let the cavalry attack like a swarm of locusts.

28 Tell the kings and governors, the leaders and the people of the kingdoms of the Medes to prepare for war!

29 The earth twists and turns in torment, because I have decided to make Babylonia a desert

where no one can live, and I won't change my mind.

30 The Babylonian soldiers have lost their strength and courage.

They stay in their fortresses, unable to fight, while the enemy breaks through the city gates,

then sets their homes on fire.

31 One messenger after another announces to the king, “Babylon has been captured!

32 The enemy now controls the river crossings!

The marshes are on fire!

Your army has panicked!”

33 I am the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, and I make this promise — “Soon Babylon will be leveled and packed down like a threshing place at harvest time.”

Babylonia Will Pay!

34 The people of Jerusalem say, “King Nebuchadnezzar made us panic.

That monster stuffed himself with us and our treasures, leaving us empty — he gobbled up what he wanted and spit out the rest.

35 The people of Babylonia harmed some of us and killed others.

Now, Lord, make them pay!”

The Lord Will Take Revenge on Babylon 

36 My people, I am on your side, and I will take revenge on Babylon.

I will cut off its water supply, and its stream will dry up.

37 Babylon will be a pile of rubble where only jackals live, and everyone will be afraid to walk among the ruins.

38 The Babylonians roar and growl like young lions.

39 And since they are hungry, I will give them a banquet.

They will celebrate, get drunk, then fall asleep, never to wake up!

40 I will lead them away to die, like sheep, lambs, and goats being led to the butcher.

41 All nations now praise Babylon, but when it is captured, those same nations will be horrified.

42 Babylon's enemies will rise like ocean waves and flood the city.

43 Horrible destruction will strike the nearby towns.

The land will become a barren desert, where no one can live or even travel.

44 I will punish Marduk, the god of Babylon, and make him vomit out everything he gobbled up. Then nations will no longer bring him gifts, and Babylon's walls will crumble.

The Lord Offers Hope to His People

45 Get out of Babylon, my people, and run for your lives, before I strike the city in my anger!

46 Don't be afraid or lose hope, though year after year there are rumors of leaders fighting for control in the city of Babylon.

47 The time will come when I will punish Babylon's false gods.

Everyone there will die, and the whole nation will be disgraced, 48 when an army attacks from the north and brings destruction.

Then the earth and the heavens and everything in them will celebrate.

49 Babylon must be overthrown, because it slaughtered the people of Israel and of many other nations.

50 My people, you escaped death when Jerusalem fell.

Now you live far from home, but you should trust me and think about Jerusalem.

Leave Babylon! Don't stay!

51 You feel ashamed and disgraced, because foreigners have entered my sacred temple.

52 Soon I will send a war to punish Babylon's idols and leave its wounded people moaning everywhere.

53 Although Babylon's walls reach to the sky, the army I send will destroy that city.

I, the Lord, have spoken.

Babylon Will Be Destroyed 

The Lord said:

54 Listen to the cries for help coming from Babylon.

Everywhere in the country the sounds of destruction can be heard.

55 The shouts of the enemy, like crashing ocean waves, will drown out Babylon's cries as I level the city.

56 An enemy will attack and destroy Babylon.

Its soldiers will be captured and their weapons broken, because I am a God who takes revenge against nations for what they do.

57 I, the Lord All-Powerful, the true King, promise that the officials and advisors, the governors and leaders, and the soldiers of Babylon will get drunk, fall asleep, and never wake up.

58 The thick walls of that city will be torn down, and its huge gates burned.

Everything that nation worked so hard to gain will go up in smoke.

Jeremiah Gives Seraiah a Scroll

59 During Zedekiah's fourth year as king of Judah, he went to Babylon. And Baruch's brother Seraiah went along as the officer in charge of arranging for places to stay overnight.

60 Before they left, I wrote on a scroll all the terrible things that would happen to Babylon. 61 I gave the scroll to Seraiah and said:

When you get to Babylon, read this scroll aloud, 62 then pray, “Our Lord, you promised to destroy this place and make it into a desert where no people or animals will ever live.”

63 When you finish praying, tie the scroll to a rock and throw it in the Euphrates River. Then say, 64 “This is how Babylon will sink when the Lord destroys it. Everyone in the city will die, and it won't have the strength to rise again.”

Agora, eu me vingarei dela e lhe darei o castigo que merece. 7 A Babilônia era na minha mão como um copo de ouro que fazia o mundo inteiro ficar bêbado. As nações beberam o vinho que havia nela e ficaram loucas. 8 De repente, a Babilônia caiu e ficou arrasada. Chorem por ela! Arranjem remédio para as suas feridas, e assim talvez ela seja curada. 9 Os estrangeiros que moravam lá disseram: “Quisemos ajudar a Babilônia, mas já era tarde demais. Vamos sair e voltar cada um para a sua pátria. Deus castigou com toda a sua força a Babilônia e a destruiu completamente.”

10 O Senhor Deus diz:

— O meu povo grita assim: “O Senhor mostrou que estamos certos. Vamos a Jerusalém contar ao povo o que o Senhor, nosso Deus, tem feito.”

11 O Senhor despertou o ânimo dos reis da Média porque ele quer destruir a Babilônia. É assim que ele vingará a destruição do seu Templo.

Os oficiais ordenam:

— Afiem as suas flechas! Aprontem os seus escudos! 12 Deem o sinal para atacar as muralhas de Babilônia! Reforcem a guarda! Coloquem sentinelas! Ponham homens de tocaia!

O Senhor Deus fez o que havia planejado; ele cumpriu a ameaça que tinha feito a respeito do povo da Babilônia. 13 A Babilônia tem muitos rios e muitos tesouros, mas chegou a hora, e o fio da sua vida está cortado. 14 O Senhor Todo-Poderoso jurou pela sua própria vida que ia trazer muitos homens para atacarem a Babilônia. Eles chegarão como uma nuvem de gafanhotos e darão o grito de vitória.

Hino de louvor a Deus

15 Pelo seu poder, o Senhor Deus fez a terra; com a sua sabedoria, ele criou o mundo e, com a sua inteligência, estendeu o céu como uma barraca.

16 Quando o Senhor dá ordem, as águas rugem no céu. Ele manda as nuvens subirem dos fins da terra. Ele faz o raio para a chuva e manda o vento sair dos seus depósitos.

17 Diante disso, todos os seres humanos são tolos e ignorantes; todos os que fabricam ídolos ficam desapontados porque fazem deuses falsos, que não têm vida.

18 Esses ídolos não valem nada; são uma tapeação. Serão destruídos quando o Senhor vier castigá-los.

19 O Deus de Jacó não é assim; foi ele quem fez todas as coisas e escolheu Israel para ser o seu povo. O seu nome é Senhor, o Todo-Poderoso.

Babilônia, poder destruidor nas mãos de Deus

20 O Senhor Deus diz:

“Babilônia, você foi o meu porrete de guerra, você foi as minhas armas de combate.

Por meio de você, eu despedacei nações e acabei com reinos.

21 Por meio de você, esmaguei cavalos e cavaleiros e destruí carros de guerra e aqueles que os dirigiam.

22 Por meio de você, matei homens e mulheres, despedacei velhos e moços e esmaguei homens e moças.

23 Por meio de você, esmigalhei pastores e os seus rebanhos, despedacei lavradores e os seus bois de arado e esmaguei governadores e altas autoridades.”

O castigo da Babilônia

24 O Senhor Deus diz:

— Vocês verão como vou fazer com que a Babilônia e o seu povo paguem por todo o mal que fizeram a Jerusalém. 25 Babilônia, você é como uma montanha que destrói o mundo inteiro; mas eu, o Senhor, sou seu inimigo. Eu a pegarei e arrasarei; eu farei você virar cinza. 26 Nenhuma das suas pedras será usada para uma nova construção. Você vai virar para sempre um deserto. Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando.

27 — Deem o sinal de ataque! Toquem as cornetas para que os povos escutem! Preparem as nações para lutarem contra Babilônia! Digam aos reinos de Ararate, Mini e Asquenaz que ataquem. Indiquem um oficial para comandar o ataque. Tragam um grande número de cavalos, como se fossem uma nuvem de gafanhotos. 28 Preparem os reis da Média, as suas autoridades, os seus oficiais e todos os países que eles controlam, para que eles guerreiem contra Babilônia. 29A terra treme e se abala porque o Senhor está fazendo o que planejou. Ele fará Babilônia virar um deserto onde não mora ninguém. 30 Os soldados babilônios pararam de lutar e ficam nas suas fortalezas. Perderam toda a coragem; parecem mulheres. Os portões da cidade estão quebrados, e as casas pegaram fogo. 31 Saem correndo mensageiros, um depois do outro, para contar ao rei da Babilônia que a cidade foi invadida de todos os lados. 32 O inimigo tomou as passagens do rio e pôs fogo nas fortalezas. Os soldados babilônios ficaram apavorados. 33 Dentro de pouco tempo, o inimigo os cortará e pisará como trigo no terreiro. O Senhor Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, está falando.

34 O rei da Babilônia cortou Jerusalém em pedaços e a devorou.

Ele esvaziou a cidade como um jarro; como um monstro, ele a engoliu.

Ele tirou o que queria e jogou o resto fora.

35 Diga o povo de Sião:

“Que a Babilônia receba de volta a violência que nos fez!”

E diga ainda o povo de Jerusalém: 

“Que a Babilônia seja castigada pelo que sofremos!”

Deus ajudará Israel

36 Assim diz o Senhor Deus ao povo de Jerusalém:

— Defenderei a causa de vocês e os vingarei. Secarei a fonte de água da Babilônia e farei com que os seus rios sequem. 37 Então Babilônia se tornará um montão de pedras, onde vivem animais ferozes. Será um espetáculo horrível. Ninguém vai morar lá, e todos os que olharem para Babilônia ficarão horrorizados por causa do que aconteceu com ela. 38 Todos os babilônios rugem como leões e rosnam como leõezinhos. 39 Será que eles são esganados? Farei uma festa para eles. Eu os embriagarei e alegrarei. Aí eles dormirão e nunca mais acordarão. 40 Eu os levarei para serem mortos, como se fossem cordeiros, bodes e carneiros. Eu, o Senhor, estou falando.

A queda de Babilônia

41 O Senhor Deus diz:

— Babilônia, a cidade que era admirada em todo o mundo, foi tomada! Que espetáculo horrível ela se tornou para as outras nações! 42 O mar rolou sobre Babilônia e a cobriu com ondas violentas. 43 As cidades estão arrasadas; são como um deserto sem água, onde ninguém mora e por onde ninguém passa. 44 Eu castigarei Bel, o deus da Babilônia, e farei com que ele devolva as coisas que roubou. As nações não o adorarão mais.

— As muralhas de Babilônia caíram. 45 Povo de Israel, fuja de lá. Que cada um salve a sua vida do fogo da minha ira! 46 Não percam a coragem, nem fiquem com medo das notícias que ouvirem. Cada ano, se espalha uma notícia diferente; são notícias de violência na terra e de um rei lutando contra outro. 47 E assim está chegando a hora em que vou castigar os ídolos da Babilônia. Os moradores da sua terra ficarão com vergonha por causa da derrota, e todos serão mortos. 48 Quando Babilônia cair e for destruída pelo povo que vem do Norte, então tudo o que existe no céu e na terra cantará de alegria. 49 Babilônia matou gente em todo o mundo e agora ela cairá porque matou tantos israelitas. Eu, o Senhor, estou falando.

Mensagem aos judeus na Babilônia

50 O Senhor diz:

— Meu povo que está na Babilônia, vocês escaparam da morte! Agora andem! Não fiquem esperando! Embora estejam longe de casa, pensem em mim, o Deus de vocês, e lembrem de Jerusalém. 51 Vocês dizem: “Estamos envergonhados porque fomos insultados. Estamos humilhados porque os estrangeiros invadiram os lugares santos do Templo.” 52 Por isso, digo que está chegando a hora em que vou castigar os ídolos da Babilônia; e os feridos vão gemer, espalhados pelo país inteiro. 53 Mesmo que a Babilônia pudesse subir até o céu e construir ali uma fortaleza, ainda assim eu mandaria gente para destruí-la. Eu, o Senhor, estou falando.

A destruição de Babilônia

54 O Senhor Deus diz: 

“Escutem os gritos em Babilônia, gente chorando por causa da destruição que há no país.

55 Estou destruindo Babilônia e fazendo com que ela fique quieta.

Como ondas violentas, os exércitos invadem e atacam com gritos barulhentos.

56 Vieram para destruir Babilônia; os seus soldados são presos, e os seus arcos e as suas flechas são quebrados.

Eu, o Senhor, sou Deus que castiga o mal; eu vou tratar Babilônia do jeito que ela merece.

57 Farei com que os seus governantes fiquem bêbados e também os seus sábios, as suas autoridades e os seus soldados.

Eles vão dormir e nunca mais vão acordar.

Sou eu, o Rei, quem está falando.

O meu nome é Senhor, o Todo-Poderoso.

58 As grossas muralhas de Babilônia serão completamente arrasadas, e os seus altos portões serão destruídos pelo fogo.

Todo o trabalho dos povos não vale nada; os esforços das nações se acabam nas chamas.”

O Senhor Todo-Poderoso falou.

A mensagem de Jeremias é enviada à Babilônia

59 Seraías, filho de Nerias e neto de Maaseias, era o oficial ajudante do rei Zedequias, de Judá. No quarto ano do reinado de Zedequias em Judá, Seraías estava de saída para a Babilônia, e então eu lhe dei algumas ordens. 60 Escrevi num livro como a Babilônia ia ser destruída e todas as outras coisas que iam acontecer com ela. 61 E disse a Seraías:

— Quando você chegar à cidade de Babilônia, faça questão de ler em voz alta tudo o que está escrito aqui. 62 Depois, ore assim: “Ó Senhor Deus, tu disseste que vais destruir este lugar, de tal modo que aqui não ficará nenhum ser vivo, nem pessoas nem animais. A cidade será como um deserto para sempre.” 63 Quando você acabar de ler para o povo este livro, amarre uma pedra nele e jogue-o no rio Eufrates. 64 Então diga: “Isto é o que acontecerá com a Babilônia — ela vai afundar e nunca mais se levantará, por causa da destruição que Deus vai trazer sobre ela.”

Speak the truth, or love?

For you, what is more important: speak the truth, or love?

If your answer was: tell the truth, you were wrong, because to speak the truth without love is brutality.

If your answer was: love, you were wrong too, because love without being true is hypocrisy.

The only answer that demonstrates maturity is: both. Someone mature is someone who can speak the truth in love, softly. Paul in Ephesians 4.15-16 is saying otherwise that he wrote to the churches in Galatia:

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore him in a spirit of gentleness; and Take heed to thyself lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself up.

Gal 6.1-3

The spirit of mildness should always be present when someone is speaking the truth to another, especially if this is true about the sin of this other person.

Truth and unity have always been in dispute in the Christian church. The reason is simple: immaturity. Only children can not handle the truth balance / unit. Paul, in the text below, shows how a Christian can be healthy as you experience growth in love and truth. One without the other is spiritual sickness sign. It can not even be personal growth - or collective - without us being maturely dealing with truth and love.

   But speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head, Christ, from whom the whole body fitly and compacted by that which every joint, according to the proper cooperation of each part, makes its own increase for edifying of itself in love.

   Eph 4.15-16

 But speaking the truth in love,

There is no way love exists,  without the truth, and there is no way exists the truth, without love. The first word of this verse is ἀληθεύοντες (alētheúontes) which literally means "telling the truth". It can also mean "to be true", and especially in this passage means "walking in the truth." The question we might ask is, what truth? In the time we live in, the relativization of truth makes this verse a basis for any heresy.

I do not believe in the relativity of truth, because it is well described in the Word and is associated with a person and his message. Christ and the Gospel are the truth. And it is worth remembering that the Gospel is present in both the New in the Old Testament.

However, we must walk on the Gospel and Christ in love. Ezra's experience shows someone who lived this recommendation even before it exists:

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

Ed 7:10

Speaking the truth in love is Christian sign of maturity. Some people love, but can not speak the truth. And there are those who like to tell the truth, but can not speak it in a loving way. So, you only live this orientation of verse 15 in a state of Christian maturity.

As Warren wrote Wiersbe, "truth without love is brutality, but without true love is hypocrisy" .⁠1 In order to avoid hypocrisy or gross, we need to grow, mature, at all ", who is the head, Christ."

grow up in all things into Him who is the head, Christ,

Christ is the head and all that is done in the body. He gives us the direction for growth. Without your guidance, we would run around the tail, like a small dog without leaving the place. It is the light of his words we find the way out of immaturity and let the brutality and hypocrisy. What God expects of us is the presence of both the truth about love in our lives. But none of this would be possible without our Christ as head, as a guiding and feeder of this body.

from whom the whole body fitly and compacted by that which every joint, according to the proper cooperation of every part, maketh increase its own for the edifying of itself in love.

Further evidence of maturity in the life of a Christian is when it is in cooperation with other Christians. Eph 4:16 explains that members of a local body - a local church - belong to one another, affect each other, and need each other. No little person in the Body of Christ. Paul had already said in Ephesians 4.2:

with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love,

Anyone who fails to live it, ceases to live the will of God. And it, sins. As such a person is considered insignificant or incapacitated, such considerations are a lie of his mind for his own soul. Just as there are no parts in a human body that are considered insignificant enough to consider removing them from our body, there is also no insignificant part in the Body of Christ. Everyone in the body have a purpose in God's eyes, and grow as they are fed, just as it is in the human body. This growth happens as in the spiritual food is given faithfully to these members. Who does not eat the Word, will always remain a spiritual baby, a beloved baby, but not to feed, will always remain dependent on others, lacking the other, useless, hypocritical and gross. The only solution - or cure - for this is the correct administration of the Word in the life of this member baby who never grew.

Hence we understand that spiritual unity is not something manufactured with techniques or strategies. For more useful to the community that are family communities, family groups, cells, small groups, Bible study centers, and many models there are family meetings among Christians, none of this can give true spiritual unity. Only the spiritual food, only the Truth can unite truth. The absence of God's truth only creates hypocrisy. And Christians must flee from it. And so, speaking the truth in love, we live together, we build and equip each other, so that we can all grow and be more like Cristo.⁠2

Christ the head, the church receives strength to grow. From it comes the ability to grow and build up. The words "well adjusted and consolidated" (συναρμολογούμενον καὶ συμβιβαζόμενον - synarmologoúmenon kaì symbibazómenon). The correct identification of these words lead us to the understanding of something that is in harmony or adaptation and something compact or sólido.⁠3 Church growth should take it to a flush compaction and full joy, celebration.

We need to be well-adjusted and consolidated. This only gives the participation of all, with everyone aware of their place in the body, their gifts, their duties, their vocations. It is in love that this process happens. Peter wrote it in a brilliant way in his second epistle:

therefore, you, gathering all diligence, add to your faith virtue with virtue, knowledge; with knowledge, self-control with self-control, perseverance perseverance, godliness; with godliness, brotherly kindness and to brotherly kindness, love. For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither inactive nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whom these things are not present is blind, seeing only what is near, forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. Therefore, my brothers, with increasing diligence to make your calling and election; because by doing so, do not stumble at any time. For in this way it will be richly supplied the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1.5-11

According to the text, we must be "fruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." That is, our lives should bear fruit naturally; fruits of repentance, goodness of fruits, forgiveness, meekness fruits, fruits of a new life, fruit of the Holy Spirit of God in our lives.

Each part of the body of Christ works for the growth of other parties. No one is useless in the Body of Christ, much less forgotten. Christ uses everyone, unless a part of that whole is sick, weak, lacking restoration.

The ideal is to be in the body it all together, cooperating, loving, forgiving, and doing the work that He, the Head, left us to do. The Body of Christ is a living organism that grows or falls ill. Paul is here guiding the church the way growth occurs healthily.

The human body metaphor serves to emphasize the unity (in love) should always be present in Igreja.⁠4 Every disunity is like an open wound in the body where viruses and foreign bacteria enter the body in it. All disagreement or disunity is an open door to Satan, evil spirits and evil, as well as being an open door to false teachers as well. A healthy body that protects from evil is a body that grows in love, telling the truth always in love.

It is vital that "grow up" in Christ if we want to be a valid expression of Jesus to the world today. And this growth can only be given through the love of each part of each member, each by his neighbor. Without love, we do not grow. Without love, you do not crescer.⁠5

Returning to the text to the Galatians, quoted above, we understand that there is, for the Christian, how to speak the truth without love. Doing this is immaturity, lack of preparation and sin. Such a person should not even speak because it is trying to correct a sin by committing another:

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore him in a spirit of gentleness; and Take heed to thyself lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself up.

Gal 6.1-3

Speak without love is try to be more than the other. As Paul says, if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, himself is wrong. It is precisely because we recognize that we are no one without the grace of God we seek to speak with love to that (a) that hurt us.

The law of Christ, that is, the will of God, is also that we take each other to endure each other in love. And when someone finds your brother or sister in sin, that (a) look for a spirit of gentleness, keeping to the same mistake, acting at all thinking the other growth which, in fact, is the growth of itself .

Falar a verdade, ou amar?

Para vocês, o que é mais importante: falar a verdade, ou amar?

Se sua resposta foi: falar a verdade, você errou, pois falar a verdade sem amor é brutalidade.

Se sua resposta foi: amar, você errou também, pois amar sem ser verdadeiro é hipocrisia.

A única resposta que demonstra maturidade é: as duas coisas. Alguém maduro é alguém que sabe falar a verdade em amor, brandamente. Paulo, em Ef 4.15-16 está a dizer de outra maneira aquilo que escreveu às igrejas na Galácia:

Irmãos, se alguém for surpreendido nalguma falta, vós, que sois espirituais, corrigi-o com espírito de brandura; e guarda-te para que não sejas também tentado. Levai as cargas uns dos outros e, assim, cumprireis a lei de Cristo. Porque, se alguém julga ser alguma coisa, não sendo nada, a si mesmo se engana.

Gl 6.1–3

O espírito de brandura sempre deve estar presente quando alguém for falar a verdade para outro, principalmente se esta verdade for sobre o pecado desta outra pessoa. 

Verdade e unidade sempre estiveram em disputa na igreja cristã. A razão é simples: imaturidade. Apenas crianças não conseguem lidar com o equilíbrio verdade/unidade. Paulo, no texto abaixo, mostra como um cristão pode ser saudável à medida que experimenta crescimento em amor e verdade. Um sem o outro é sinal de enfermidade espiritual. Não é possível nem mesmo haver crescimento pessoal — ou coletivo — sem que estejamos lidando maduramente com a verdade e o amor.

   Mas, seguindo a verdade em amor, cresçamos em tudo naquele que é a cabeça, Cristo, de quem todo o corpo, bem ajustado e consolidado pelo auxílio de toda junta, segundo a justa cooperação de cada parte, efetua o seu próprio aumento para a edificação de si mesmo em amor.

   Ef 4.15–16

 Mas, seguindo a verdade em amor, 

Não há como existe amor sem a verdade, e não há como existir a verdade sem o amor. A primeira palavra deste verso é ἀληθεύοντες (alētheúontes) que significa literalmente “falando a verdade”. Pode significar também “ser verdadeiro”, e, especialmente nesta passagem, significa “caminhando na verdade”. A pergunta que poderíamos fazer é: qual verdade? No tempo em que vivemos, a relativização da verdade torna este verso uma base para qualquer heresia.

Não creio na relativização da verdade, pois a mesma é bem descrita na Palavra e está associada a uma pessoa e sua mensagem. Cristo e o Evangelho são a verdade. E é bom lembrar que o Evangelho está presente tanto no Novo quanto no Antigo Testamento.

No entanto, devemos caminhar sobre o Evangelho e em Cristo em amor. A experiência de Esdras demonstra alguém que viveu esta recomendação antes mesmo dela existir:

Porque Esdras tinha disposto o coração para buscar a Lei do SENHOR, e para a cumprir, e para ensinar em Israel os seus estatutos e os seus juízos.

Ed 7.10

Falar a verdade em amor é sinal de maturidade cristã. Há quem ame, mas não consegue falar a verdade. E há quem goste de falar a verdade, mas não sabe falá-la de um modo amoroso. Por isso, só se vive esta orientação do verso 15 em um estado de maturidade cristã.

Como escreveu Warren Wiersbe, “verdade sem amor é brutalidade, mas amor sem verdade é hipocrisia”.⁠1 A fim de não sermos hipócritas ou brutos, precisamos crescer, amadurecer, em tudo “naquele que é a cabeça, Cristo”.

Cristo é o cabeça e de tudo o que é feito no Corpo. É ele quem nos dá a direção para o crescimento. Sem suas orientações, correríamos ao redor do rabo, como um pequeno cachorro, sem sair do lugar. É pela iluminação de suas palavras que encontramos o caminho para sairmos da imaturidade e deixarmos a brutalidade ou a hipocrisia. O que Deus espera de nós é a presença tanto da verdade quanto do amor em nossas vidas. Mas nada disso seria possível sem que tivéssemos Cristo como cabeça, como orientador e alimentador deste Corpo.

de quem todo o corpo, bem ajustado e consolidado pelo auxílio de toda junta, segundo a justa cooperação de cada parte, efetua o seu próprio aumento para a edificação de si mesmo em amor.

Outra evidência de maturidade na vida de um cristão é quando este está em cooperação com outros cristãos. Ef 4.16 explica que os membros de um corpo local — uma igreja local — pertencem um ao outro, afetam um ao outro, e precisam um do outro. Não há pessoa insignificante no Corpo de Cristo. Paulo já havia dito em Ef 4.2:

com toda a humildade e mansidão, com longanimidade, suportando-vos uns aos outros em amor,

Qualquer pessoa que deixa de viver isso, deixa de viver a vontade de Deus. E, nisso, peca. Por mais que tal pessoa se considere insignificante ou incapaz, tais considerações são uma mentira de sua mente para sua própria alma. Assim como não há partes em um corpo humano que sejam consideradas insignificantes a ponto de considerarmos retirá-las de nosso corpo, também não há parte insignificante no Corpo de Cristo. Todos no Corpo possuem um propósito aos olhos de Deus, e crescem à medida em que são alimentadas, exatamente como é no corpo humano. Este crescimento acontece à medida em que o alimento espiritual é administrado fielmente a estes membros. Quem não se alimenta da Palavra, permanecerá sempre um bebê espiritual, um bebê amado, mas que por não se alimentar, permanecerá sempre dependente dos outros, carente dos outros, inútil, hipócrita e bruto. A única solução — ou remédio — para isso é a correta administração da Palavra na vida deste membro bebê que nunca cresceu.

Daqui nós entendemos que a unidade espiritual não é algo fabricado com técnicas ou estratégias. Por mais úteis para a comunhão que sejam as comunidades familiares, os grupos familiares, as células, os pequenos grupos, os núcleos de estudo bíblico, e os tantos modelos que existem de reuniões familiares entre os cristãos, nada disso pode dar verdadeira unidade espiritual. Somente o alimento espiritual, somente a Verdade pode unir de verdade. A ausência da Verdade de Deus só gera hipocrisia. E os cristãos devem fugir da mesma. É assim que, falando a verdade em amor, vivemos juntos, equipamos e edificamos uns aos outros, a fim de que todos nós possamos crescer e ser mais parecido com Cristo.⁠2

De Cristo, o cabeça, a igreja recebe força para crescer. É dele que vem a capacidade para crescermos e nos edificarmos. As palavras “bem ajustado e consolidada” (συναρμολογούμενον καὶ συμβιβαζόμενον – synarmologoúmenon kaì symbibazómenon). A correta identificação destas palavras nos levam à compreensão de algo que está em harmonia ou adaptação e de algo compacto ou sólido.⁠3 O crescimento da igreja deve levá-la a um nivele compactação e plena alegria, celebração. 

É necessário que estejamos bem ajustados e consolidados. Isso só se dá pela participação de todos, estando todos cientes de seu lugar no corpo, seus dons, suas funções, suas vocações. É em amor que todo esse processo acontece. Pedro escreveu isso de um modo brilhante em sua segunda epístola:

por isso mesmo, vós, reunindo toda a vossa diligência, associai com a vossa fé a virtude com a virtude, o conhecimento; com o conhecimento, o domínio próprio com o domínio próprio, a perseverança com a perseverança, a piedade; com a piedade, a fraternidade com a fraternidade, o amor. Porque estas coisas, existindo em vós e em vós aumentando, fazem com que não sejais nem inativos, nem infrutuosos no pleno conhecimento de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo. Pois aquele a quem estas coisas não estão presentes é cego, vendo só o que está perto, esquecido da purificação dos seus pecados de outrora. Por isso, irmãos, procurai, com diligência cada vez maior, confirmar a vossa vocação e eleição; porquanto, procedendo assim, não tropeçareis em tempo algum. Pois desta maneira é que vos será amplamente suprida a entrada no reino eterno de nosso Senhor e Salvador Jesus Cristo.

2Pe 1.5–11

Segundo o texto, devemos ser “frutuosos no pleno conhecimento de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo”. Ou seja, nossa vida deve dar frutos naturalmente; frutos de arrependimento, frutos de bondade, frutos de perdão, frutos de mansidão, frutos de uma nova vida, frutos do Espírito Santo de Deus em nossas vidas.

Cada parte no Corpo de Cristo coopera para o crescimento das demais partes. Ninguém é inútil no Corpo de Cristo, muito menos esquecido. Cristo usa a todos, a menos que uma parte desse todo esteja doente, fraco, carecendo de restauração.

O ideal no Corpo é estar ele todo junto, cooperando, amando, perdoando, e fazendo a Obra que Ele, a Cabeça, nos deixou para fazer. O Corpo de Cristo é um organismo vivo que cresce ou adoece. Paulo está aqui orientando a igreja a maneira como o crescimento ocorre saudavelmente.

A metáfora do corpo humano serve para enfatizar a unidade (em amor) que deve sempre estar presente na Igreja.⁠4 Toda desunião é como uma ferida aberta no corpo por onde vírus e bactérias estranhas ao corpo entram no mesmo. Todo desentendimento ou desunião é uma porta aberta para Satanás, espíritos imundos e malignos, além de ser uma porta aberta para falsos mestres também. Um corpo saudável que se protege do mal é um corpo que cresce em amor, falando a verdade sempre em amor.

É vital que “cresçamos” em Cristo se queremos ser uma expressão válida de Jesus para o mundo de hoje. E esse crescer só pode se dar através do amor de cada parte, de cada membro, de cada um por seu próximo. Sem amor, não crescemos. Sem amor, você não crescer.⁠5 

Voltando ao texto aos Gálatas, citado mais acima, entendemos que não há, para o cristão, como falar a verdade sem amor. Fazer isso é imaturidade, despreparo e pecado. Tal pessoa nem deveria falar, pois está tentando corrigir um pecado cometendo outro:

Irmãos, se alguém for surpreendido nalguma falta, vós, que sois espirituais, corrigi-o com espírito de brandura; e guarda-te para que não sejas também tentado. Levai as cargas uns dos outros e, assim, cumprireis a lei de Cristo. Porque, se alguém julga ser alguma coisa, não sendo nada, a si mesmo se engana.

Falar sem amor é julgar ser mais que o outro. Como Paulo diz: se alguém julga ser alguma coisa, não sendo nada, a si mesmo se engana. É exatamente por reconhecermos que não somos ninguém sem a graça de Deus que procuramos falar com amor àquele(a) que nos feriu.

A lei de Cristo, ou seja, a vontade de Deus, é também que levemos uns aos outros, que suportemos uns aos outros, em amor. E quando alguém encontrar seu irmão ou irmã em pecado, que o(a) procure com espírito de brandura, guardando-se para cair no mesmo erro, agindo em tudo pensando no crescimento do outro que, na verdade, é o crescimento de si mesmo.

Solomon continues praying:

3   And what about those who lived in your holy land before your people settled there? 4You hated them because of their horrible deeds—they practiced magic and did vulgar things when they worshiped their gods; 5they mercilessly sacrificed children and ate human flesh and blood. They were members of pagan cults 6and murdered their own helpless children. That's why you decided to let our ancestors destroy them, 7so that your most precious land would accept a group of people worthy to be your servants.

8   But since these people were merely human, you spared many of them and sent hornets ahead of your army to destroy them a little at a time. 9 You did this, even though you could have let your own people destroy that evil nation, or you could have wiped them out all at once with fierce animals or with one harsh word. 10 Although you knew that they were sinful by nature and that they would never give up their evil thoughts, you still punished them little by little, giving them time to turn back to you. 11 They were under your curse from the beginning, and though you were not afraid of anyone, you let them go unpunished.

God Rules All People

Solomon continues praying:

12 All of us are merely human, and we cannot question what you have done, nor can we refuse to let you punish us. No one would dare to blame you for destroying those nations you created or dare to defend the guilty in your court of law. 13 You alone are God, and you care for all creation. So you don't have to prove to any other gods that you do what is right, 14 and no kings or rulers can accuse you of wrongly punishing anyone. 15 You are always perfectly fair, and you would never punish innocent people. 16 You do what is right because you have the strength to do so, and your great power makes you merciful to everyone.

17 When anyone doubts your strength, you show how strong you are, and you correct anyone who understands and still doubts. 18 Although you have power to do all things, you are gentle when you judge us, and you rule us with great patience.

Lessons God Taught His People

Solomon continues:

19 Our God, by the things you have done, you have given your people a wonderful hope and have taught them to live right and be kind because you have let them turn from evil. 20 The enemies of your people deserved death, but you patiently gave them time to give up their sins, before punishing them. 21 You did severely punish your people, even though you had made wonderful promises and agreements with them. 22 Yes, we were punished! But our enemies were punished 10,000 times worse, so that when we judge others, we will remember your kindness, and when we are being judged, we can expect mercy.

God Punished the Egyptians

Solomon continues praying:

23 The Egyptians foolishly lived a sinful life, but you punished them by using those disgusting creatures they worshiped. 24 In fact, they had gone so far from the truth that they were like senseless children, worshiping the most worthless animals. 25 And so you made them look like stupid children, when you punished them. 26 Those who failed to take this warning seriously then received from you the punishment they deserved. 27 While they were being punished because of the creatures they had worshiped, they became angry with those creatures and finally realized that you are the only true God, even though they had always refused to worship you. All this explains why they were punished so terribly.

Poderias mesmo fazê-los desaparecer devorados por animais selvagens ou com uma palavra de condenação. 10 Mas a fim de lhes dares tempo para se arrependerem, castigaste-os aos poucos, mesmo sabendo que eram uma gente perversa, um povo mau por natureza, e que a sua maneira de pensar nunca iria mudar.

11 Desde o princípio eram uma raça maldita e não foi por medo de alguém que não os castigaste pelos seus pecados. 12 Pois quem poderia perguntar-te: «Que fizeste?» Quem pode ser contra o teu julgamento? Quem pode condenar-te por teres destruído povos que tu mesmo criaste? Ou quem aparecerá na tua presença para defender a causa de pessoas injustas?

13 Além de ti não há outro Deus que cuide de todos e a quem precises de provar que os teus julgamentos são justos. 14 Não há nenhum rei ou outra autoridade que possa desafiar-te,

ficando do lado daqueles que castigaste. 15 Tu és justo e governas todas as coisas com justiça. Condenar alguém que não o merecesse não é a maneira como usas o teu poder; 16 ele é a base da tua justiça. Tu tens compaixão de todos porque és o Senhor de todos.

17 Mostras a tua força aos que duvidam do teu grande poder; castigas as pessoas que o conhecem e, mesmo assim, o desafiam.

18 Tu, o Todo-Poderoso, julgas a todos com equidade; governas com toda a clemência, pois podes agir sempre que quiseres.

Lições de Deus para Israel

19 Assim tens ensinado ao teu povo que quem é justo deve também ser bondoso.

Tu tens dado uma firme esperança aos teus filhos, pois dás-lhes a oportunidade de se arrependerem dos seus pecados.

20 Com muito cuidado e carinho, tu castigaste os inimigos do teu povo, mesmo quando eles mereciam ser mortos; deste-lhes tempo e oportunidade para se afastarem das suas maldades.

21 Foi com muita dureza que julgaste os teus filhos, embora tivesses feito alianças com os seus antepassados e tivesses jurado que lhes darias coisas boas.

22 De facto, corriges-nos, mas castigas os nossos inimigos dez mil vezes mais.

Tu ages assim para que nos lembremos da tua bondade e julguemos os outros esperando para nós a tua misericórdia.

O castigo dos egípcios

23 Por isso, castigaste os insensatos que durante toda a sua vida fizeram o mal; castigaste-os com os próprios deuses detestáveis que eles adoravam.

24 Pois eles desviaram-se para muito longe nos caminhos do erro; adoraram como deuses os animais mais feios e repugnantes; enganaram-se a si mesmos como criancinhas insensatas.

25 Por isso, como se fossem crianças sem uso da razão, enviaste-lhes um castigo que os envergonha.

26 Mas os que não se importaram com um castigo tão leve receberão de Deus o castigo que merecem.

27 Castigados pelos mesmos animais que tinham estabelecido como deuses e agora os faziam sofrer, ficaram zangados e reconheceram como o verdadeiro Deus aquele que antes não quiseram aceitar. Por isso, foram condenados a sofrer um castigo muito pior.
