The Death of Lazarus

1-2   A man by the name of Lazarus was sick in the village of Bethany. He had two sisters, Mary and Martha. This was the same Mary who later poured perfume on the Lord's head and wiped his feet with her hair. 3 The sisters sent a message to the Lord and told him that his good friend Lazarus was sick.

4 When Jesus heard this, he said, “His sickness won't end in death. It will bring glory to God and his Son.”

5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and brother. 6But he stayed where he was for two more days. 7 Then he said to his disciples, “Now we will go back to Judea.”

8 “Teacher,” they said, “the people there want to stone you to death! Why do you want to go back?”

9 Jesus answered, “Aren't there twelve hours in each day? If you walk during the day, you will have light from the sun, and you won't stumble. 10 But if you walk during the night, you will stumble, because you don't have any light.” 11 Then he told them, “Our friend Lazarus is asleep, and I am going there to wake him up.”

12 They replied, “Lord, if he is asleep, he will get better.” 13 Jesus really meant that Lazarus was dead, but they thought he was talking only about sleep.

14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead! 15 I am glad I wasn't there, because now you will have a chance to put your faith in me. Let's go to him.”

16 Thomas, whose nickname was “Twin,” said to the other disciples, “Come on. Let's go, so we can die with him.”

Jesus Brings Lazarus to Life

17 When Jesus got to Bethany, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was less than three kilometers from Jerusalem, 19 and many people had come from the city to comfort Martha and Mary because their brother had died.

20 When Martha heard that Jesus had arrived, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 Yet even now I know that God will do anything you ask.”

23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will live again!”

24   Martha answered, “I know he will be raised to life on the last day, when all the dead are raised.”

25 Jesus then said, “I am the one who raises the dead to life! Everyone who has faith in me will live, even if they die. 26 And everyone who lives because of faith in me will never really die. Do you believe this?”

27 “Yes, Lord!” she replied. “I believe you are the Christ, the Son of God. You are the one we hoped would come into the world.”

28 After Martha said this, she went and privately said to her sister Mary, “The Teacher is here, and he wants to see you.” 29 As soon as Mary heard this, she got up and went out to Jesus. 30 He was still outside the village where Martha had gone to meet him. 31 Many people had come to comfort Mary, and when they saw her quickly leave the house, they thought she was going out to the tomb to cry. So they followed her.

32 Mary went to where Jesus was. Then as soon as she saw him, she knelt at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33 When Jesus saw that Mary and the people with her were crying, he was terribly upset 34 and asked, “Where have you put his body?”

They replied, “Lord, come and you will see.”

35 Jesus started crying, 36 and the people said, “See how much he loved Lazarus.”

37 Some of them said, “He gives sight to the blind. Why couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?”

38 Jesus was still terribly upset. So he went to the tomb, which was a cave with a stone rolled against the entrance. 39 Then he told the people to roll the stone away. But Martha said, “Lord, you know that Lazarus has been dead four days, and there will be a bad smell.”

40 Jesus replied, “Didn't I tell you that if you had faith, you would see the glory of God?”

41 After the stone had been rolled aside, Jesus looked up toward heaven and prayed, “Father, I thank you for answering my prayer. 42 I know that you always answer my prayers. But I said this, so the people here would believe you sent me.”

43 When Jesus had finished praying, he shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The man who had been dead came out. His hands and feet were wrapped with strips of burial cloth, and a cloth covered his face.

Jesus then told the people, “Untie him and let him go.”

The Plot To Kill Jesus

(Matthew 26.1-5; Mark 14.1,2; Luke 22.1,2)

45 Many of the people who had come to visit Mary saw the things Jesus did, and they put their faith in him. 46 Others went to the Pharisees and told what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called the council together and said, “What should we do? This man is working a lot of miracles. 48 If we don't stop him now, everyone will put their faith in him. Then the Romans will come and destroy our temple and our nation.”

49 One of the council members was Caiaphas, who was also high priest that year. He spoke up and said, “You people don't have any sense at all! 50 Don't you know it is better for one person to die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed?” 51 Caiaphas did not say this on his own. As high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation. 52 Yet Jesus would not die just for the Jewish nation. He would die to bring together all of God's scattered people. 53 From that day on, the council started making plans to put Jesus to death.

54 Because of this plot against him, Jesus stopped going around in public. He went to the town of Ephraim, which was near the desert, and he stayed there with his disciples.

55 It was almost time for Passover. Many of the Jewish people who lived out in the country had come to Jerusalem to get themselves ready for the festival. 56 They looked around for Jesus. Then when they were in the temple, they asked each other, “You don't think he will come here for Passover, do you?”

57 The chief priests and the Pharisees told the people to let them know if any of them saw Jesus. This is how they hoped to arrest him.

Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida.

A morte de Lázaro

1 Um homem chamado Lázaro estava doente. Ele era do povoado de Betânia, onde Maria e a sua irmã Marta moravam. 2 (Esta Maria era a mesma que pôs perfume nos pés do Senhor Jesus e os enxugou com os seus cabelos. Era o irmão dela, Lázaro, que estava doente.) 3 As duas irmãs mandaram dizer a Jesus:

— Senhor, o seu querido amigo Lázaro está doente!

4 Quando Jesus recebeu a notícia, disse:

— O resultado final dessa doença não será a morte de Lázaro. Isso está acontecendo para que Deus revele o seu poder glorioso; e assim, por causa dessa doença, a natureza divina do Filho de Deus será revelada.

5 Jesus amava muito Marta, e a sua irmã, e também Lázaro. 6 Porém quando soube que Lázaro estava doente, ainda ficou dois dias onde estava. 7 Então disse aos seus discípulos:

— Vamos voltar para a Judeia.

8 Mas eles disseram:

— Mestre, faz tão pouco tempo que o povo de lá queria matá-lo a pedradas, e o senhor quer voltar?

9 Jesus respondeu:

— Por acaso o dia não tem doze horas? Se alguém anda de dia não tropeça porque vê a luz deste mundo. 10 Mas, se anda de noite, tropeça porque nele não existe luz.

11 Jesus disse isso e depois continuou:

— O nosso amigo Lázaro está dormindo, mas eu vou lá acordá-lo.

12 — Senhor, se ele está dormindo, isso quer dizer que vai ficar bom! — disseram eles.

13 Mas o que Jesus queria dizer era que Lázaro estava morto. Porém eles pensavam que ele estivesse falando do sono natural. 14 Então Jesus disse claramente:

— Lázaro morreu, 15 mas eu estou alegre por não ter estado lá com ele, pois assim vocês vão crer. Vamos até a casa dele.

16 Então Tomé, chamado “o Gêmeo”, disse aos outros discípulos:

— Vamos nós também a fim de morrer com o Mestre!

Jesus é a ressurreição e a vida

17 Quando Jesus chegou, já fazia quatro dias que Lázaro havia sido sepultado. 18 Betânia ficava a menos de três quilômetros de Jerusalém, 19 e muitas pessoas tinham vindo visitar Marta e Maria para as consolarem por causa da morte do irmão. 20 Quando Marta soube que Jesus estava chegando, foi encontrar-se com ele. Porém Maria ficou sentada em casa. 21 Então Marta disse a Jesus:

— Se o senhor estivesse aqui, o meu irmão não teria morrido! 22 Mas eu sei que, mesmo assim, Deus lhe dará tudo o que o senhor pedir a ele.

23 — O seu irmão vai ressuscitar! — disse Jesus.

24 Marta respondeu:

— Eu sei que ele vai ressuscitar no último dia!

25 Então Jesus afirmou:

— Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida. Quem crê em mim, ainda que morra, viverá; 26 e quem vive e crê em mim nunca morrerá. Você acredita nisso?

27 — Sim, senhor! — disse ela. — Eu creio que o senhor é o Messias, o Filho de Deus, que devia vir ao mundo.

Jesus chora

28 Depois de dizer isso, Marta foi, chamou Maria, a sua irmã, e lhe disse em particular:

— O Mestre chegou e está chamando você.

29 Quando Maria ouviu isso, levantou-se depressa e foi encontrar-se com Jesus. 30 Pois ele não tinha chegado ao povoado, mas ainda estava no lugar onde Marta o havia encontrado. 31 As pessoas que estavam na casa com Maria, consolando-a, viram que ela se levantou e saiu depressa. Então foram atrás dela, pois pensavam que ela ia ao túmulo para chorar ali.

32 Maria chegou ao lugar onde Jesus estava e logo que o viu caiu aos pés dele e disse:

— Se o senhor tivesse estado aqui, o meu irmão não teria morrido!

33 Jesus viu Maria chorando e viu as pessoas que estavam com ela chorando também. Então ficou muito comovido e aflito 34 e perguntou:

— Onde foi que vocês o sepultaram?

— Venha ver, senhor! — responderam.

35 Jesus chorou.

36 Então as pessoas disseram:

— Vejam como ele amava Lázaro!

37 Mas algumas delas disseram:

— Ele curou o cego. Será que não poderia ter feito alguma coisa para que Lázaro não morresse?

A ressurreição de Lázaro

38 Jesus ficou outra vez muito comovido. Ele foi até o túmulo, que era uma gruta com uma pedra colocada na entrada, 39 e ordenou:

— Tirem a pedra!

Marta, a irmã do morto, disse:

— Senhor, ele está cheirando mal, pois já faz quatro dias que foi sepultado!

40 Jesus respondeu:

— Eu não lhe disse que, se você crer, você verá a revelação do poder glorioso de Deus?

41 Então tiraram a pedra. Jesus olhou para o céu e disse:

— Pai, eu te agradeço porque me ouviste. 42 Eu sei que sempre me ouves; mas eu estou dizendo isso por causa de toda esta gente que está aqui, para que eles creiam que tu me enviaste.

43 Depois de dizer isso, gritou:

— Lázaro, venha para fora!

44 E o morto saiu. Os seus pés e as suas mãos estavam enfaixados com tiras de pano, e o seu rosto estava enrolado com um pano. Então Jesus disse:

— Desenrolem as faixas e deixem que ele vá.

O plano para matar Jesus

Mateus 26.1-5; Marcos 14.1-2; Lucas 22.1-2

45 Muitas pessoas que tinham ido visitar Maria viram o que Jesus tinha feito e creram nele. 46 Mas algumas pessoas voltaram e contaram aos fariseus o que ele havia feito. 47 Então os fariseus e os chefes dos sacerdotes se reuniram com o Conselho Superior e disseram:

— O que é que nós vamos fazer? Esse homem está fazendo muitos milagres! 48 Se deixarmos que ele continue fazendo essas coisas, todos vão crer nele. Aí as autoridades romanas agirão contra nós e destruirão o Templo e o nosso país.

49 Então Caifás, que naquele ano era o Grande Sacerdote, disse:

— Vocês não sabem nada! 50 Será que não entendem que para vocês é melhor que morra apenas um homem pelo povo do que deixar que o país todo seja destruído?

51 Naquele momento Caifás não estava falando por si mesmo. Mas, como ele era o Grande Sacerdote naquele ano, estava profetizando que Jesus ia morrer pela nação. 52 E não somente pela nação, mas também para reunir em um só corpo todos os filhos de Deus que estão espalhados por toda parte.

53 Então, daquele dia em diante, os líderes judeus fizeram planos para matar Jesus. 54 Por isso ele já não andava publicamente na Judeia, mas foi para uma região perto do deserto, a uma cidade chamada Efraim, e ficou ali com os seus discípulos.

55 Faltava pouco tempo para a Festa da Páscoa. Muitos judeus foram a Jerusalém antes da festa para tomar parte na cerimônia de purificação. 56 Eles procuravam Jesus e, no pátio do Templo, perguntavam uns aos outros:

— O que é que vocês acham? Será que ele vem à festa?

57 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e os fariseus queriam prender Jesus. Por isso tinham dado ordem para que, se alguém soubesse, contasse onde ele estava.

I am one with the Father.

A Story about Sheep

1 Jesus said:

I tell you for certain only thieves and robbers climb over the fence instead of going in through the gate to the sheep pen. 2-3 But the gatekeeper opens the gate for the shepherd, and he goes in through it. The sheep know their shepherd's voice. He calls each of them by name and leads them out.

4 When he has led out all of his sheep, he walks in front of them, and they follow, because they know his voice. 5 The sheep will not follow strangers. They don't recognize a stranger's voice, and they run away.

6 Jesus told the people this story. But they did not understand what he was talking about.

Jesus Is the Good Shepherd

7 Jesus said:

I tell you for certain that I am the gate for the sheep. 8 Everyone who came before me was a thief or a robber, and the sheep did not listen to any of them. 9 I am the gate. All who come in through me will be saved. Through me they will come and go and find pasture.

10 A thief comes only to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so everyone would have life, and have it fully. 11 I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd gives up his life for his sheep. 12 Hired workers are not like the shepherd. They don't own the sheep, and when they see a wolf coming, they run off and leave the sheep. Then the wolf attacks and scatters the flock. 13 Hired workers run away because they don't care about the sheep.

14   I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and they know me. 15 Just as the Father knows me, I know the Father, and I give up my life for my sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not in this sheep pen. I must also bring them together, when they hear my voice. Then there will be one flock of sheep and one shepherd.

17T he Father loves me, because I give up my life, so I may receive it back again. 18 No one takes my life from me. I give it up willingly! I have the power to give it up and the power to receive it back again, just as my Father commanded me to do.

19 The people took sides because of what Jesus had told them. 20 Many of them said, “He has a demon in him! He is crazy! Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “How could anyone with a demon in him say these things? No one like this could give sight to a blind person!”

Jesus Is Rejected

22   That winter, Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Temple Festival. 23 One day he was walking in the part of the temple known as Solomon's Porch, 24 and the people gathered all around him. They said, “How long are you going to keep us guessing? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly!”

25 Jesus answered:

I have told you, and you refused to believe me. The things I do by my Father's authority show who I am. 26 But since you are not my sheep, you don't believe me. 27 My sheep know my voice, and I know them. They follow me, 28 and I give them eternal life, so that they will never be lost. No one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father gave them to me, and he is greater than all others. No one can snatch them from his hands, 30 and I am one with the Father.

31 Once again the people picked up stones in order to kill Jesus. 32 But he said, “I have shown you many good things my Father sent me to do. Which one are you going to stone me for?”

33 They answered, “We are not stoning you because of any good thing you did. We are stoning you because you did a terrible thing. You are just a man, and here you are claiming to be God!”

34   Jesus replied:

In your Scriptures doesn't God say, “You are gods”? 35 You can't argue with the Scriptures, and God spoke to those people and called them gods. 36 So why do you accuse me of a terrible sin for saying that I am the Son of God? After all, it is the Father who prepared me for this work. He is also the one who sent me into the world. 37 If I don't do as my Father does, you should not believe me. 38 But if I do what my Father does, you should believe because of that, even if you don't have faith in me. Then you will know for certain that the Father is one with me, and I am one with the Father.

39 Again they wanted to arrest Jesus. But he escaped 40 and crossed the Jordan to the place where John had earlier been baptizing. While Jesus was there, 41 many people came to him. They were saying, “John didn't work any miracles, but everything he said about Jesus is true.” 42 A lot of those people also put their faith in Jesus.

Eu e o Pai somos um.

Jesus, o pastor verdadeiro

1 Jesus disse:

— Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: quem não entra no curral das ovelhas pela porta, mas pula o muro é um ladrão e bandido. 2 Mas quem entra pela porta é o pastor do rebanho. 3 O porteiro abre a porta para ele. As ovelhas reconhecem a sua voz quando ele as chama pelo nome, e ele as leva para fora do curral. 4 Quando todas estão do lado de fora, ele vai na frente delas, e elas o seguem porque conhecem a voz dele. 5 Mas de jeito nenhum seguirão um estranho! Pelo contrário, elas fugirão, pois não conhecem a voz de estranhos.

6 Jesus fez esta comparação, mas ninguém entendeu o que ele queria dizer.

Jesus, a porta

7 Então Jesus continuou:

— Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: eu sou a porta por onde as ovelhas passam. 8 Todos os que vieram antes de mim são ladrões e bandidos, mas as ovelhas não deram atenção à voz deles. 9 Eu sou a porta. Quem entrar por mim será salvo; poderá entrar e sair e achará comida. 10 O ladrão só vem para roubar, matar e destruir; mas eu vim para que as ovelhas tenham vida, a vida completa.

Jesus, o bom pastor

11 — Eu sou o bom pastor; o bom pastor dá a vida pelas ovelhas. 12 Um empregado trabalha somente por dinheiro; ele não é pastor, e as ovelhas não são dele. Por isso, quando vê um lobo chegando, ele abandona as ovelhas e foge. Então o lobo ataca e espalha as ovelhas. 13 O empregado foge porque trabalha somente por dinheiro e não se importa com as ovelhas. 14 -15 Eu sou o bom pastor. Assim como o Pai me conhece, e eu conheço o Pai, assim também conheço as minhas ovelhas, e elas me conhecem. E estou pronto para morrer por elas. 16 Tenho outras ovelhas que não estão neste curral. Eu preciso trazer essas também, e elas ouvirão a minha voz. Então elas se tornarão um só rebanho com um só pastor.

17 — O Pai me ama porque eu dou a minha vida para recebê-la outra vez. 18 Ninguém tira a minha vida de mim, mas eu a dou por minha própria vontade. Tenho o direito de dá-la e de tornar a recebê-la, pois foi isso o que o meu Pai me mandou fazer.

19 Quando ouviu isso, o povo se dividiu outra vez. Muitos diziam:

20 — Ele está dominado por um demônio! Está louco! Por que é que vocês escutam o que ele diz?

21 Outros afirmavam:

— Quem está dominado por um demônio não fala assim! Será que um demônio pode dar vista aos cegos?

O povo rejeita Jesus

22 Era inverno, e em Jerusalém estavam comemorando a Festa da Dedicação. 23 Jesus estava andando pelo pátio do Templo, perto da entrada chamada “Alpendre de Salomão”. 24 Então o povo se ajuntou em volta dele e perguntou:

— Até quando você vai nos deixar na dúvida? Diga com franqueza: você é ou não é o Messias?

25 Jesus respondeu:

— Eu já disse, mas vocês não acreditaram. As obras que eu faço pelo poder do nome do meu Pai falam a favor de mim, 26 mas vocês não creem porque não são minhas ovelhas. 27 As minhas ovelhas escutam a minha voz; eu as conheço, e elas me seguem. 28 Eu lhes dou a vida eterna, e por isso elas nunca morrerão. Ninguém poderá arrancá-las da minha mão. 29 O poder que o Pai me deu é maior do que tudo, e ninguém pode arrancá-las da mão dele. 30 Eu e o Pai somos um.

31 Então eles tornaram a pegar pedras para matar Jesus. 32 E ele disse:

— Eu fiz diante de vocês muitas coisas boas que o Pai me mandou fazer. Por causa de qual delas vocês querem me matar?

33 Eles responderam:

— Não é por causa de nenhuma coisa boa que queremos matá-lo, mas porque, ao dizer isso, você está blasfemando contra Deus. Pois você, que é apenas um ser humano, está se fazendo de Deus.

34 Então Jesus afirmou:

— Na Lei de vocês está escrito que Deus disse: “Vocês são deuses.” 35 Sabemos que as Escrituras Sagradas sempre dizem a verdade, e sabemos que, de fato, Deus chamou de deuses aqueles que receberam a sua mensagem. 36 Quanto a mim, o Pai me escolheu e me enviou ao mundo. Então por que vocês dizem que blasfemo contra Deus quando afirmo que sou Filho dele? 37 Se não faço o que o meu Pai manda, não creiam em mim. 38 Mas, se eu faço, e vocês não creem em mim, então creiam pelo menos nas coisas que faço. E isso para que vocês fiquem sabendo de uma vez por todas que o Pai vive em mim e que eu vivo no Pai.

39 A essa altura tentaram novamente prendê-lo, mas Jesus escapou das mãos deles.

40 Ele voltou de novo para o lado leste do rio Jordão, foi para o lugar onde João Batista tinha batizado antes e ficou lá. 41 E muita gente ia vê-lo, dizendo:

— João não fez nenhum milagre, mas tudo o que ele disse sobre Jesus é verdade.

42 E naquele lugar muita gente creu em Jesus.

I would be mad ...

I would be mad not see that I do not belong to myself, that I  do not control and do not command my feelings.

I would be mad not understand that something new came over me and my life.

I would be mad not to accept everything that I am and have comes from God.

In my blindness, I thought I could control how I feel ... kill love and be on my way.

In my misunderstanding,I thought that my thoughts and findings were only merit of my intelligence, logic ... foolish pride ....

On my refusal, I thought everything I was It is just the result of long hours of work.

And who I am ... learned from life and my courage ... silly claim.

I am not anyone or anything without my father ... I am the work of a powerful being and owner of all that we see, touch and also what we do not know that there is ...

Today, feeling a tightness of the chest, and a strong shortness of breath quieted me ... smiled ... with all the agony that my body felt, I was invaded by a peace, and happiness ... At that moment I imagined .. . I'm coming home ... I'm sure I did my best .... I did the only thing I needed to give meaning to my life .... I loved

Gone .... Still here typing this text as part of a context, a history ... now with more certainty than ever, I am not of this world, I'm on it ...

Spiritual Blindness

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

1 As Jesus walked along, he saw a man who had been blind since birth. 2 Jesus' disciples asked, “Teacher, why was this man born blind? Was it because he or his parents sinned?”

3 “No, it wasn't!” Jesus answered. “But because of his blindness, you will see God work a miracle for him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do what the one who sent me wants me to do. When night comes, no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light for the world.”

6 After Jesus said this, he spit on the ground. He made some mud and smeared it on the man's eyes. 7 Then he said, “Go wash off the mud in Siloam Pool.” The man went and washed in Siloam, which means “One Who Is Sent.” When he had washed off the mud, he could see.

8 The man's neighbors and the people who had seen him begging wondered if he really could be the same man. 9 Some of them said he was the same beggar, while others said he only looked like him. But he told them, “I am that man.”

10 “Then how can you see?” they asked.

11 He answered, “Someone named Jesus made some mud and smeared it on my eyes. He told me to go and wash it off in Siloam Pool. When I did, I could see.”

12 “Where is he now?” they asked.

“I don't know,” he answered.

The Pharisees Try To Find Out What Happened

13-14 The day when Jesus made the mud and healed the man was a Sabbath. So the people took the man to the Pharisees. 15 They asked him how he was able to see, and he answered, “Jesus made some mud and smeared it on my eyes. Then after I washed it off, I could see.”

16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man Jesus doesn't come from God. If he did, he would not break the law of the Sabbath.”

Others asked, “How could someone who is a sinner work such a miracle?”

Since the Pharisees could not agree among themselves, 17 they asked the man, “What do you say about this one who healed your eyes?”

“He is a prophet!” the man told them.

18 But the Jewish leaders would not believe that the man had once been blind. They sent for his parents 19 and asked them, “Is this the son that you said was born blind? How can he now see?”

20 The man's parents answered, “We are certain that he is our son, and we know that he was born blind. 21But we don't know how he got his sight or who gave it to him. Ask him! He is old enough to speak for himself.”

22-23 The man's parents said this because they were afraid of their leaders. The leaders had already agreed that no one was to have anything to do with anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah.

24 The leaders called the man back and said, “Swear by God to tell the truth! We know that Jesus is a sinner.”

25 The man replied, “I don't know if he is a sinner or not. All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see!”

26 “What did he do to you?” they asked. “How did he heal your eyes?”

27 The man answered, “I have already told you once, and you refused to listen. Why do you want me to tell you again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”

28 The leaders insulted the man and said, “You are his follower! We are followers of Moses. 29 We are sure God spoke to Moses, but we don't even know where Jesus comes from.”

30 “How strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don't know where he comes from. 31 We know that God listens only to people who love and obey him. God doesn't listen to sinners. 32 And this is the first time in history anyone has ever given sight to someone born blind. 33 Jesus could not do anything unless he came from God.”

34 The leaders told the man, “You have been a sinner since the day you were born! Do you think you can teach us anything?” Then they said, “You can never come back into any of our synagogues!”

35 When Jesus heard what had happened, he went and found the man. Then Jesus asked, “Do you have faith in the Son of Man?”

36 He replied, “Sir, if you will tell me who he is, I will put my faith in him.”

37 “You have already seen him,” Jesus answered, “and right now he is talking with you.”

38 The man said, “Lord, I put my faith in you!” Then he worshiped Jesus.

39 Jesus told him, “I came to judge the people of this world. I am here to give sight to the blind and to make blind everyone who can see.”

40 When the Pharisees heard Jesus say this, they asked, “Are we blind?”

41 Jesus answered, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty. But now that you claim to see, you will keep on being guilty.”

A cegueira espiritual

Jesus e um cego

1 Jesus ia caminhando quando viu um homem que tinha nascido cego. 2 Os seus discípulos perguntaram:

— Mestre, por que este homem nasceu cego? Foi por causa dos pecados dele ou por causa dos pecados dos pais dele?

3 Jesus respondeu:

— Ele é cego, sim, mas não por causa dos pecados dele nem por causa dos pecados dos pais dele. É cego para que o poder de Deus se mostre nele. 4 Precisamos trabalhar enquanto é dia, para fazer as obras daquele que me enviou. Pois está chegando a noite, quando ninguém pode trabalhar. 5 Enquanto estou no mundo, eu sou a luz do mundo.

6 Depois de dizer isso, Jesus cuspiu no chão, fez um pouco de lama com a saliva, passou a lama nos olhos do cego 7 e disse:

— Vá lavar o rosto no tanque de Siloé. (Este nome quer dizer “Aquele que Foi Enviado”.)

O cego foi, lavou o rosto e voltou vendo. 8 Os seus vizinhos e as pessoas que costumavam vê-lo pedindo esmola perguntavam:

— Não é este o homem que ficava sentado pedindo esmola?

9 — É! — diziam alguns.

— Não, não é. Mas é parecido com ele! — afirmavam outros.

Porém ele dizia:

— Sou eu mesmo.

10 — Como é que agora você pode ver? — perguntaram.

11 Ele respondeu:

— O homem chamado Jesus fez um pouco de lama, passou a lama nos meus olhos e disse: “Vá ao tanque de Siloé e lave o rosto.” Então eu fui, lavei o rosto e fiquei vendo.

12 — Onde está esse homem? — perguntaram.

— Não sei! — respondeu ele.

Os fariseus fazem perguntas

13 Então levaram aos fariseus o homem que havia sido cego. 14 O dia em que Jesus havia feito lama e curado o homem da cegueira era um sábado. 15 Aí os fariseus também perguntaram como ele tinha sido curado.

— Ele pôs lama nos meus olhos, eu lavei o rosto e agora estou vendo — respondeu o homem.

16 Alguns fariseus disseram:

— O homem que fez isso não é de Deus porque não respeita a lei do sábado.

E outros perguntaram:

— Como pode um pecador fazer milagres tão grandes?

E por causa disso houve divisão entre eles. 17 Então os fariseus tornaram a perguntar ao homem:

— Você diz que ele curou você da cegueira. E o que é que você diz dele?

— Ele é um profeta! — respondeu o homem.

18 Os líderes judeus não acreditavam que ele tinha sido cego e que agora podia ver. Por isso chamaram os pais dele 19 e perguntaram:

— Esse homem é filho de vocês? Vocês dizem que ele nasceu cego. E como é que agora ele está vendo?

20 Os pais responderam:

— Sabemos que ele é nosso filho e que nasceu cego. 21 Mas não sabemos como é que ele agora pode ver e não sabemos também quem foi que o curou. Ele é maior de idade; perguntem, e ele mesmo poderá explicar.

22 Os pais disseram isso porque estavam com medo, pois os líderes judeus tinham combinado expulsar da sinagoga quem afirmasse que Jesus era o Messias. 23 Foi por isso que os pais disseram: “Ele é maior de idade; perguntem a ele.”

24 Então os líderes judeus chamaram pela segunda vez o homem que tinha sido cego e disseram:

— Jure por Deus que você vai dizer a verdade. Nós sabemos que esse homem é pecador.

25 Ele respondeu:

— Se ele é pecador, eu não sei. De uma coisa eu sei: eu era cego e agora vejo!

26 — O que foi que ele fez a você? Como curou você da cegueira? — tornaram a perguntar.

27 O homem respondeu:

— Eu já disse, e vocês não acreditaram. Por que querem ouvir isso outra vez? Por acaso vocês também querem ser seguidores dele?

28 Então eles o xingaram e disseram:

— Você é que é seguidor dele! Nós somos seguidores de Moisés. 29 Sabemos que Deus falou com Moisés; mas este homem, nós nem mesmo sabemos de onde ele é.

30 Ele respondeu:

— Que coisa esquisita! Vocês não sabem de onde ele é, mas ele me curou. 31 Sabemos que Deus não atende pecadores, mas ele atende os que o respeitam e fazem a sua vontade. 32 Desde que o mundo existe, nunca se ouviu dizer que alguém tivesse curado um cego de nascença. 33 Se esse homem não fosse enviado por Deus, não teria podido fazer nada.

34 Eles disseram:

— Você nasceu cheio de pecado e é você que quer nos ensinar?

E o expulsaram da sinagoga.

A cegueira espiritual

35 Jesus ficou sabendo que tinham expulsado o homem da sinagoga. Foi procurá-lo e, quando o encontrou, perguntou:

— Você crê no Filho do Homem?

36 Ele respondeu:

— Senhor, quem é o Filho do Homem para que eu creia nele?

37 Jesus disse:

— Você já o viu! É ele que está falando com você!

38 — Eu creio, Senhor! — disse o homem. E se ajoelhou diante dele.

39 Então Jesus afirmou:

— Eu vim a este mundo para julgar as pessoas, a fim de que os cegos vejam e que fiquem cegos os que veem.

40 Alguns fariseus que estavam com ele ouviram isso e perguntaram:

— Será que isso quer dizer que nós também somos cegos?

41 — Se vocês fossem cegos, não teriam culpa! — respondeu Jesus. — Mas, como dizem que podem ver, então continuam tendo culpa.
