I defeated my enemies because God broke through them like a mighty flood

David's Palace in Jerusalem

(2 Samuel 5.11-16)

1 King Hiram of Tyre sent some officials to David. They brought along carpenters and stone workers, and enough cedar logs to build David a palace. 2 David now knew that the Lord had made him a powerful king of Israel for the good of his people.

3 After David moved to Jerusalem, he married more women and had more sons and daughters. 4-7 His children born there were Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines

(2 Samuel 5.17-25)

8 When the Philistines heard that David had become king of Israel, they came to capture him. But David heard about their plan and marched out to meet them in battle. 9 The Philistines had already camped in Rephaim Valley and were raiding the nearby villages.

10 David asked God, “Should I attack the Philistines? Will you help me win?”

The Lord told David, “Yes, attack them! I will give you victory.”

11 David and his army marched to Baal-Perazim, where they attacked and defeated the Philistines. He said, “I defeated my enemies because God broke through them like a mighty flood.” So he named the place “The Lord Broke Through.” 12 Then David ordered his troops to burn the idols that the Philistines had left behind.

13 Some time later, the Philistines came back into the hill country and camped in Rephaim Valley. 14 David asked God what he should do, and God answered, “Don't attack them from the front. Circle around behind them where the balsam trees are. 15 Wait there until you hear the treetops making the sound of marching troops. That sound will mean I have marched out ahead of you to fight the Philistine army. So you must then attack quickly!”

16 David obeyed God and he defeated the Philistines. He even chased them all the way from Gibeon to the entrance to Gezer.

17 From then on, David became even more famous, and the Lord made all the nations afraid of him.

Comment Devotional:

One of the great joys in life is to build or purchase a home. After many years as a fugitive, wandering from one place to another, David is now living in Jerusalem protected from his enemies. This privileged position allows him to devote time and resources to build a permanent house for himself and his family.

As a representative of the nation, it was expected of him to have not only a comfortable home, but a palace. Countless workers from his own people as well as business partners, as the king of Tyre, helped in completing the project.

While building his palace, David had to defend the nation against dangerous enemies, like the Philistines. It was the king’s custom before leaving for battle, to consult the Lord about what he should do.

On one occasion God instructed him to strike the Philistines with a frontal attack and gave him the victory. On another occasion, God told him to attack them from the rear in front of the poplar trees. David received detailed instructions and was obedient to execute them; as a result, achieved significant victories against his enemies.

Think about the battles you need to face. Have you consulted the Lord for instructions, completely willing to follow His directions?

God is intensely interested in guiding you and granting you victory, just as He did for David. You have only to trust Him and obey!

Don't Brag about Tomorrow

1   Don't brag about tomorrow! Each day brings its own surprises.

2 Don't brag about yourself — let others praise you.

3 Stones and sand are heavy, but trouble caused by a fool is a much heavier load.

4 An angry person is dangerous, but a jealous person is even worse.

5 A truly good friend will openly correct you.

6 You can trust a friend who corrects you, but kisses from an enemy are nothing but lies.

7 If you have had enough to eat, honey doesn't taste good, but if you are really hungry, you will eat anything. 

8 When you are far from home, you feel like a bird without a nest.

9 The sweet smell of incense can make you feel good, but true friendship is better still.

10 Don't desert an old friend of your family or visit your relatives when you are in trouble.

A friend nearby is better than relatives far away.

11 My child, show good sense! Then I will be happy and able to answer anyone who criticizes me.

12 Be cautious and hide when you see danger — don't be stupid and walk right into trouble.

13 You deserve to lose your coat if you loan it to someone to guarantee payment for the debt of a stranger.

14 A loud greeting early in the morning is the same as a curse.

15 The steady dripping of rain and the nagging of a wife are one and the same.

16 It's easier to catch the wind or hold olive oil in your hand than to stop a nagging wife.

17 Just as iron sharpens iron, friends sharpen the minds of each other.

18 Take care of a tree, and you will eat its fruit; look after your master, and you will be praised.

19 You see your face in a mirror and your thoughts in the minds of others.

20 Death and the grave are never satisfied, and neither are humans.

21 Gold and silver are tested in a red-hot furnace, but we are tested by praise.

22 No matter how hard you beat a fool, you can't pound out the foolishness.

23 You should take good care of your sheep and goats, 24because wealth and honor don't last forever.

25 After the hay is cut and the new growth appears and the harvest is over, 26 you can sell lambs and goats to buy clothes and land.

27 From the milk of the goats, you can make enough cheese to feed your family and all your servants.

God cannot stand the prayers of anyone who disobeys his Law.

The Law of God Makes Sense

1 Wicked people run away when no one chases them, but those who live right are as brave as lions.

2 In time of civil war there are many leaders, but a sensible leader restores law and order.

3 When someone poor takes over and mistreats the poor, it's like a heavy rain destroying the crops.

4 Lawbreakers praise criminals, but law-abiding citizens always oppose them.

5 Criminals don't know what justice means, but all who respect the Lord understand it completely.

6 It's better to be poor and live right, than to be rich and dishonest.

7 It makes good sense to obey the Law of God, but you disgrace your parents if you make friends with worthless nobodies.

8 If you make money by charging high interest rates, you will lose it all to someone who cares for the poor.

9 God cannot stand the prayers of anyone who disobeys his Law.

10 By leading good people to sin, you dig a pit for yourself, but all who live right will have a bright future.

11 The rich think highly of themselves, but anyone poor and sensible sees right through them.

12 When an honest person wins, it's time to celebrate; when crooks are in control, it's best to hide.

13 If you don't confess your sins, you will be a failure. But God will be merciful if you confess your sins and give them up.

14 The Lord blesses everyone who is afraid to do evil, but if you are cruel, you will end up in trouble.

15 A ruler who mistreats the poor is like a roaring lion or a bear hunting for food.

16 A heartless leader is a fool, but anyone who refuses to get rich by cheating others will live a long time.

17 Don't give help to murderers! Make them stay on the run for as long as they live.

18 Honesty will keep you safe, but everyone who is crooked will suddenly fall.

19 Work hard, and you will have a lot of food; waste time, and you will have a lot of trouble.

20 God blesses his loyal people, but punishes all who want to get rich quick.

21 It isn't right to be unfair, but some people can be bribed with only a piece of bread.

22 Don't be selfish and eager to get rich— you will end up worse off than you can imagine.

23 Honest correction is appreciated more than flattery.

24 If you cheat your parents and don't think it's wrong, you are a common thief.

25 Selfish people cause trouble, but you will live a full life if you trust the Lord.

26 Only fools would trust what they alone think, but if you live by wisdom, you will do all right.

27 Giving to the poor will keep you from poverty, but if you close your eyes to their needs, everyone will curse you.

28 When crooks are in control, everyone tries to hide, but when they lose power, good people are everywhere.

Deus despreza até as orações de quem não obedece à sua lei.

1 Os maus fogem, mesmo quando ninguém os persegue, mas o homem honesto é valente como um leão.

2 Quando a nação tem líderes inteligentes e sensatos, ela se torna forte e firme; mas, quando a nação peca, ela muda de governo a toda hora.

3 Um pobre que explora outros pobres é como a chuva que destrói tudo e acaba com as colheitas.

4 Quem não respeita a lei de Deus está do lado dos maus, mas quem lhe obedece está contra eles.

5 Os maus não sabem o que é justiça, mas os que procuram conhecer a vontade do Senhor sabem muito bem.

7 O moço que obedece à lei de Deus é inteligente, porém o que anda em más companhias é uma vergonha para o seu pai.

8 Quem fica rico emprestando dinheiro a juros altos e explorando o povo acaba deixando a sua riqueza para quem é bondoso com os pobres.

9 Deus despreza até as orações de quem não obedece à sua lei.

10 Quem engana uma pessoa honesta e a leva a fazer o mal cairá na sua própria armadilha; mas quem é correto será bem recompensado.

11 Os ricos sempre pensam que são sábios, mas o pobre que é inteligente os conhece muito bem.

12 Quando os bons alcançam o poder, todos festejam; mas, quando o poder cai nas mãos dos maus, o povo se esconde de medo.

13 Quem tenta esconder os seus pecados não terá sucesso na vida, mas Deus tem misericórdia de quem confessa os seus pecados e os abandona.

14 Quem teme o Senhor é feliz, mas quem se revolta contra ele cairá na desgraça.

15 Como um leão furioso ou um urso feroz, assim é o governo mau que domina um povo pobre.

16 O governador sem juízo será um ditador cruel; aquele que odeia a desonestidade governará por muito tempo.

17 O assassino cava muito depressa a sua própria sepultura; não tente fazê-lo parar.

18 Quem é honesto tem segurança, mas quem é desonesto logo fracassa.

19 Quem cultiva a sua terra tem comida com fartura, mas quem gasta o tempo com coisas sem importância sempre será pobre.

20 A vida da pessoa honesta é cheia de felicidade, mas quem tem pressa de enriquecer não fica sem castigo.

21 É errado favorecer alguém no tribunal, mas alguns juízes fazem isso até por pouco dinheiro.

22 O ganancioso tem tanta pressa de ficar rico, que nem percebe que a pobreza está chegando.

23 Corrija uma pessoa, e no futuro ela apreciará isso mais do que se você a tivesse elogiado.

24 Quem acha que não é pecado roubar do seu pai ou da sua mãe é pior do que um ladrão comum.

25 O egoísta sempre causa problemas. Quem confia no Senhor terá sucesso.

26 Quem confia em si mesmo é tolo, mas quem segue os ensinamentos dos sábios terá segurança.

27 Quem dá aos pobres não passará necessidade, mas quem faz de conta que os pobres não existem será muito amaldiçoado.

28 Quando os maus sobem ao poder, o povo se esconde de medo; quando eles caem do poder, o número das pessoas honestas aumenta.
