So why do you refuse to come back to me?

The People Took the Wrong Road

4 The Lord said:

People of Jerusalem, when you stumble and fall, you get back up, and if you take a wrong road, you turn around and go back.

5 So why do you refuse to come back to me? Why do you hold so tightly to your false gods?

6 I listen carefully, but none of you admit that you've done wrong. Without a second thought, you run down the wrong road like horses running blindly into battle. 7 Storks, doves, swallows, and thrushes all know when it's time to fly away for the winter and when to come back. But you, my people, don't know what I demand.

8 You say, “We are wise because we have the teachings and laws of the Lord.”

But I say that your teachers have turned my words into lies!

9 Your wise men have rejected what I say, and so they have no wisdom.

Now they will be trapped and put to shame; they won't know what to do.

10 I'll give their wives and fields to strangers.

Everyone is greedy and dishonest, whether poor or rich.

Even the prophets and priests cannot be trusted.

11 All they ever offer to my deeply wounded people are empty hopes for peace.

12 They should be ashamed of the way they live, but they don't even blush.

And so, when I punish Judah, they will end up on the ground, dead like everyone else.

13 I will wipe them out. They are vines without grapes; fig trees without figs or leaves. They have not done a thing that I told them! 

I, the Lord, have spoken.

The People and Their Punishment 

14 The people of Judah say to each other, “What are we waiting for?

Let's run to a town with walls and die there.

We rebelled against the Lord, and we were sentenced to die by drinking poison.

15 We had hoped for peace and a time of healing, but all we got was terror.

16 Our enemies have reached the town of Dan in the north, and the snorting of their horses

makes us tremble with fear.

The enemy will destroy Jerusalem and our entire nation. No one will survive.” 

17 “Watch out!” the Lord says.

“I'm sending poisonous snakes to attack you, and no one can stop them.”

Meu povo, por que é que vocês viram as costas para mim?

Pecado e castigo

4 O Senhor Deus me mandou dizer ao seu povo:

— Quando alguém cai, será que não se levanta? Quando alguém erra o caminho, não torna a voltar? 5 Meu povo, por que é que vocês viram as costas para mim? Por que estão sempre se afastando de mim? Vocês se agarram aos seus erros e não querem voltar para mim. 6 Eu escutei com atenção, mas vocês não falaram a verdade. Ninguém ficou triste por causa da sua maldade; ninguém perguntou: “O que foi que eu fiz de errado?” Cada um continua seguindo o seu próprio caminho, como um cavalo que corre depressa para a batalha. 7 Até as rolas, garças e andorinhas sabem quando é tempo de voar para outras terras; as cegonhas sabem quando é tempo de voltar. Mas você, meu povo, não segue as leis que eu lhe dei.

8 — Como é que vocês têm a coragem de dizer: “Nós somos sábios, nós temos a Lei do Senhor”? Mas vejam! Os mestres da Lei desonestos têm falsificado a Lei quando a copiam. 9 Os sábios serão envergonhados; ficarão confusos e atrapalhados. Eles rejeitaram as minhas palavras. Que sabedoria é essa que eles têm? 10 Por isso, darei as mulheres deles para outros homens e as suas terras, para novos donos. Porque todos, importantes ou humildes, procuram ganhar dinheiro desonestamente. Até os profetas e os sacerdotes — todos são desonestos. 11 Eles tratam dos ferimentos do meu povo como se fossem coisa sem importância. E dizem: “Vai tudo bem”, quando na verdade tudo vai mal. 12 Será que ficaram envergonhados por terem feito essas coisas que eu detesto? Não! Não ficaram envergonhados de jeito nenhum; eles nem sabem o que é sentir vergonha. Por isso, vão cair como outros têm caído; quando eu os castigar, eles vão ficar arrasados. Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando.

13 — Eu, o Senhor, gostaria de reunir o meu povo como o lavrador ajunta as suas colheitas. Mas eles são como parreiras sem uvas e como figueiras sem figos; até as suas folhas secaram. Por isso, eu deixei que os estrangeiros tomassem o país.

14 — Por que estamos aqui parados? — pergunta o povo de Deus. — Venham, vamos correr para as cidades cercadas de muralhas e morrer ali. O Senhor, nosso Deus, nos condenou à morte. O Senhor nos deu água envenenada para beber porque pecamos contra ele. 15 Esperamos a paz, porém não veio nada de bom; esperamos um tempo de descanso, mas o que veio foi o terror. 16 Os nossos inimigos já entraram na cidade de Dã; estamos ouvindo os seus cavalos bufando. Quando os cavalos deles rincham, a terra toda treme. Os inimigos vieram para destruir a nossa terra, e tudo o que ela tem, e também a nossa cidade e os seus moradores.

17 — Atenção! — diz o Senhor. — Estou mandando cobras venenosas para o meio de vocês, serpentes que não podem ser dominadas e que vão mordê-los.

The Final Judgment

31  When the Son of Man comes in his glory with all his angels, he will sit on his royal throne. 32 The people of all nations will be brought before him, and he will separate them, as shepherds separate their sheep from their goats.

33 He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the king will say to those on his right, “My father has blessed you! Come and receive the kingdom that was prepared for you before the world was created. 35 When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat, and when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me, 36 and when I was naked, you gave me clothes to wear. When I was sick, you took care of me, and when I was in jail, you visited me.”

37 Then the ones who pleased the Lord will ask, “When did we give you something to eat or drink? 38 When did we welcome you as a stranger or give you clothes to wear 39 or visit you while you were sick or in jail?”

40 The king will answer, “Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me.”

41 Then the king will say to those on his left, “Get away from me! You are under God's curse. Go into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels! 42 I was hungry, but you did not give me anything to eat, and I was thirsty, but you did not give me anything to drink. 43 I was a stranger, but you did not welcome me, and I was naked, but you did not give me any clothes to wear. I was sick and in jail, but you did not take care of me.”

44 Then the people will ask, “Lord, when did we fail to help you when you were hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in jail?”

45 The king will say to them, “Whenever you failed to help any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you failed to do it for me.”

46   Then Jesus said, “Those people will be punished forever. But the ones who pleased God will have eternal life.”

Foi por amor, e por amor, a vida não escapa.

O juízo final

31 Jesus terminou, dizendo:

— Quando o Filho do Homem vier como Rei, com todos os anjos, ele se sentará no seu trono real. 32 Todos os povos da terra se reunirão diante dele, e ele separará as pessoas umas das outras, assim como o pastor separa as ovelhas das cabras. 33 Ele porá os bons à sua direita e os outros, à esquerda. 34 Então o Rei dirá aos que estiverem à sua direita: “Venham, vocês que são abençoados pelo meu Pai! Venham e recebam o Reino que o meu Pai preparou para vocês desde a criação do mundo. 35 Pois eu estava com fome, e vocês me deram comida; estava com sede, e me deram água. Era estrangeiro, e me receberam na sua casa. 36 Estava sem roupa, e me vestiram; estava doente, e cuidaram de mim. Estava na cadeia, e foram me visitar.”

37 — Então os bons perguntarão: “Senhor, quando foi que o vimos com fome e lhe demos comida ou com sede e lhe demos água? 38 Quando foi que vimos o senhor como estrangeiro e o recebemos na nossa casa ou sem roupa e o vestimos? 39 Quando foi que vimos o senhor doente ou na cadeia e fomos visitá-lo?”

40 — Aí o Rei responderá: “Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: quando vocês fizeram isso ao mais humilde dos meus irmãos, foi a mim que fizeram.”

41 — Depois ele dirá aos que estiverem à sua esquerda: “Afastem-se de mim, vocês que estão debaixo da maldição de Deus! Vão para o fogo eterno, preparado para o Diabo e os seus anjos! 42 Pois eu estava com fome, e vocês não me deram comida; estava com sede, e não me deram água. 43 Era estrangeiro, e não me receberam na sua casa; estava sem roupa, e não me vestiram. Estava doente e na cadeia, e vocês não cuidaram de mim.”

44 — Então eles perguntarão: “Senhor, quando foi que vimos o senhor com fome, ou com sede, ou como estrangeiro, ou sem roupa, ou doente, ou na cadeia e não o ajudamos?”

45 — O Rei responderá: “Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: todas as vezes que vocês deixaram de ajudar uma destas pessoas mais humildes, foi a mim que deixaram de ajudar.”

46 E Jesus terminou assim:

— Portanto, estes irão para o castigo eterno, mas os bons irão para a vida eterna.

Spiritual blindness

35 When Jesus heard what had happened, he went and found the man. Then Jesus asked, “Do you have faith in the Son of Man?”

36 He replied, “Sir, if you will tell me who he is, I will put my faith in him.”

37 “You have already seen him,” Jesus answered, “and right now he is talking with you.”

38 The man said, “Lord, I put my faith in you!” Then he worshiped Jesus.

39 Jesus told him, “I came to judge the people of this world. I am here to give sight to the blind and to make blind everyone who can see.”

40 When the Pharisees heard Jesus say this, they asked, “Are we blind?”

41 Jesus answered, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty. But now that you claim to see, you will keep on being guilty.”

A Story about Sheep

1 Jesus said:

I tell you for certain only thieves and robbers climb over the fence instead of going in through the gate to the sheep pen. 2-3 But the gatekeeper opens the gate for the shepherd, and he goes in through it. The sheep know their shepherd's voice. He calls each of them by name and leads them out.

4 When he has led out all of his sheep, he walks in front of them, and they follow, because they know his voice. 5 The sheep will not follow strangers. They don't recognize a stranger's voice, and they run away.

6 Jesus told the people this story. But they did not understand what he was talking about.

Jesus Is the Good Shepherd

7 Jesus said:

I tell you for certain that I am the gate for the sheep. 8 Everyone who came before me was a thief or a robber, and the sheep did not listen to any of them. 9 I am the gate. All who come in through me will be saved. Through me they will come and go and find pasture.

10 A thief comes only to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so everyone would have life, and have it fully. 11 I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd gives up his life for his sheep. 12 Hired workers are not like the shepherd. They don't own the sheep, and when they see a wolf coming, they run off and leave the sheep. Then the wolf attacks and scatters the flock. 13 Hired workers run away because they don't care about the sheep.

14  I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and they know me. 15  Just as the Father knows me, I know the Father, and I give up my life for my sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not in this sheep pen. I must also bring them together, when they hear my voice. Then there will be one flock of sheep and one shepherd.

17 The Father loves me, because I give up my life, so I may receive it back again. 18 No one takes my life from me. I give it up willingly! I have the power to give it up and the power to receive it back again, just as my Father commanded me to do.

19 The people took sides because of what Jesus had told them. 20 Many of them said, “He has a demon in him! He is crazy! Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “How could anyone with a demon in him say these things? No one like this could give sight to a blind person!”

A cegueira espiritual

35 Jesus ficou sabendo que tinham expulsado o homem da sinagoga. Foi procurá-lo e, quando o encontrou, perguntou:

— Você crê no Filho do Homem?

36 Ele respondeu:

— Senhor, quem é o Filho do Homem para que eu creia nele?

37 Jesus disse:

— Você já o viu! É ele que está falando com você!

38 — Eu creio, Senhor! — disse o homem. E se ajoelhou diante dele.

39 Então Jesus afirmou:

— Eu vim a este mundo para julgar as pessoas, a fim de que os cegos vejam e que fiquem cegos os que veem.

40 Alguns fariseus que estavam com ele ouviram isso e perguntaram:

— Será que isso quer dizer que nós também somos cegos?

41  — Se vocês fossem cegos, não teriam culpa! — respondeu Jesus. — Mas, como dizem que podem ver, então continuam tendo culpa.

Jesus, o pastor verdadeiro

1 Jesus disse:

— Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: quem não entra no curral das ovelhas pela porta, mas pula o muro é um ladrão e bandido. 2 Mas quem entra pela porta é o pastor do rebanho. 3 O porteiro abre a porta para ele. As ovelhas reconhecem a sua voz quando ele as chama pelo nome, e ele as leva para fora do curral. 4 Quando todas estão do lado de fora, ele vai na frente delas, e elas o seguem porque conhecem a voz dele. 5 Mas de jeito nenhum seguirão um estranho! Pelo contrário, elas fugirão, pois não conhecem a voz de estranhos.

6 Jesus fez esta comparação, mas ninguém entendeu o que ele queria dizer.

Jesus, a porta

7 Então Jesus continuou:

— Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: eu sou a porta por onde as ovelhas passam. 8 Todos os que vieram antes de mim são ladrões e bandidos, mas as ovelhas não deram atenção à voz deles. 9 Eu sou a porta. Quem entrar por mim será salvo; poderá entrar e sair e achará comida. 10 O ladrão só vem para roubar, matar e destruir; mas eu vim para que as ovelhas tenham vida, a vida completa.

Jesus, o bom pastor

11 — Eu sou o bom pastor; o bom pastor dá a vida pelas ovelhas. 12 Um empregado trabalha somente por dinheiro; ele não é pastor, e as ovelhas não são dele. Por isso, quando vê um lobo chegando, ele abandona as ovelhas e foge. Então o lobo ataca e espalha as ovelhas. 13 O empregado foge porque trabalha somente por dinheiro e não se importa com as ovelhas. 14 -15 Eu sou o bom pastor. Assim como o Pai me conhece, e eu conheço o Pai, assim também conheço as minhas ovelhas, e elas me conhecem. E estou pronto para morrer por elas. 16  Tenho outras ovelhas que não estão neste curral. Eu preciso trazer essas também, e elas ouvirão a minha voz. Então elas se tornarão um só rebanho com um só pastor.

17 — O Pai me ama porque eu dou a minha vida para recebê-la outra vez. 18 Ninguém tira a minha vida de mim, mas eu a dou por minha própria vontade. Tenho o direito de dá-la e de tornar a recebê-la, pois foi isso o que o meu Pai me mandou fazer.

19 Quando ouviu isso, o povo se dividiu outra vez. Muitos diziam:

20 — Ele está dominado por um demônio! Está louco! Por que é que vocês escutam o que ele diz?

21 Outros afirmavam:

— Quem está dominado por um demônio não fala assim! Será que um demônio pode dar vista aos cegos?
