Jesus and the Devil

(Matthew 4.1-11; Mark 1.12,13)

1 When Jesus returned from the Jordan River, the power of the Holy Spirit was with him, and the Spirit led him into the desert. 2 For 40 days Jesus was tested by the devil, and during that time he went without eating.When it was all over, he was hungry.

3 The devil said to Jesus, “If you are God's Son, tell this stone to turn into bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say, ‘No one can live only on food.’ ”

5 Then the devil led Jesus up to a high place and quickly showed him all the nations on earth. 6 The devil said, “I will give all this power and glory to you. It has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 Just worship me, and you can have it all.”

8   Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say: 

‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’ ”

9 Finally, the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem and had him stand on top of the temple. The devil said, “If you are God's Son, jump off. 10-11 The Scriptures say:

‘God will tell his angels to take care of you. They will catch you in their arms, and you will not even hurt your feet on the stones.’ ”

12   Jesus answered, “The Scriptures also say, ‘Don't try to test the Lord your God!’ ”

13 After the devil had finished testing Jesus in every way possible, he left him for a while.

Jesus Begins His Work

(Matthew 4.12-17; Mark 1.14,15)

14 Jesus returned to Galilee with the power of the Spirit. News about him spread everywhere. 15 He taught in the Jewish synagogues, and everyone praised him.

The People of Nazareth Turn against Jesus

(Matthew 13.53-58; Mark 6.1-6)

16 Jesus went back to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and as usual he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath. When he stood up to read from the Scriptures, 17he was given the book of Isaiah the prophet. He opened it and read,

18   “The Lord's Spirit has come to me, because he has chosen me to tell the good news to the poor. The Lord has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to free everyone who suffers, 19 and to say, ‘This is the year the Lord has chosen.’ ”

20 Jesus closed the book, then handed it back to the man in charge and sat down. Everyone in the synagogue looked straight at Jesus.

21 Then Jesus said to them, “What you have just heard me read has come true today.”

22 All the people started talking about Jesus and were amazed at the wonderful things he said. They kept on asking, “Isn't he Joseph's son?”

23 Jesus answered:

You will certainly want to tell me this saying, “Doctor, first make yourself well.” You will tell me to do the same things here in my own hometown that you heard I did in Capernaum. 24 But you can be sure that no prophets are liked by the people of their own hometown.

25   Once during the time of Elijah there was no rain for three and a half years, and people everywhere were starving. There were many widows in Israel, 26 but Elijah was sent only to a widow in the town of Zarephath near the city of Sidon. 27 During the time of the prophet Elisha, many men in Israel had leprosy. But no one was healed, except Naaman who lived in Syria.

28 When the people in the synagogue heard Jesus say this, they became so angry 29 that they got up and threw him out of town. They dragged him to the edge of the cliff on which the town was built, because they wanted to throw him down from there. 30 But Jesus slipped through the crowd and got away.

A Man with an Evil Spirit

(Mark 1.21-28)

31 Jesus went to the town of Capernaum in Galilee and taught the people on the Sabbath. 32 His teaching amazed them because he spoke with power. 33There in the synagogue was a man with an evil spirit. He yelled out, 34 “Hey, Jesus of Nazareth, what do you want with us? Are you here to get rid of us? I know who you are! You are God's Holy One.”

35 Jesus ordered the evil spirit to be quiet and come out. The demon threw the man to the ground in front of everyone and left without harming him.

36 They all were amazed and kept saying to each other, “What kind of teaching is this? He has power to order evil spirits out of people!” 37 News about Jesus spread all over that part of the country.

Jesus Heals Many People

(Matthew 8.14-17; Mark 1.29-34)

38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's home. When Jesus got there, he was told that Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever. 39 So Jesus went over to her and ordered the fever to go away. Right then she was able to get up and serve them a meal.

40 After the sun had set, people with all kinds of diseases were brought to Jesus. He put his hands on each one of them and healed them. 41 Demons went out of many people and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” But Jesus ordered the demons not to speak because they knew he was the Messiah.

42 The next morning Jesus went out to a place where he could be alone, and crowds came looking for him. When they found him, they tried to stop him from leaving. 43 But Jesus said, “People in other towns must hear the good news about God's kingdom. This is why I was sent.” 44 So he kept on preaching in the synagogues in Judea.

A tentação de Jesus

Mateus 4.1-11; Marcos 1.12-13

1 Jesus, cheio do Espírito Santo, voltou do rio Jordão e foi levado pelo Espírito ao deserto. 2 Ali ele foi tentado pelo Diabo durante quarenta dias. Nesse tempo todo ele não comeu nada e depois sentiu fome. 3 Então o Diabo lhe disse:

— Se você é o Filho de Deus, mande que esta pedra vire pão.

4 Jesus respondeu:

— As Escrituras Sagradas afirmam que o ser humano não vive só de pão.

5 Aí o Diabo levou Jesus para o alto, mostrou-lhe num instante todos os reinos do mundo 6 e disse:

— Eu lhe darei todo este poder e toda esta riqueza, pois tudo isto me foi dado, e posso dar a quem eu quiser. 7 Isto tudo será seu se você se ajoelhar diante de mim e me adorar.

8 Jesus respondeu:

— As Escrituras Sagradas afirmam:

“Adore o Senhor, seu Deus, e sirva somente a ele.”

9 Depois o Diabo o levou a Jerusalém e o colocou na parte mais alta do Templo e disse:

— Se você é o Filho de Deus, jogue-se daqui, 10 pois as Escrituras Sagradas afirmam:

“Deus mandará que os seus anjos cuidem de você.

11 Eles vão segurá-lo com as suas mãos, para que nem mesmo os seus pés sejam feridos nas pedras.”

12 Então Jesus respondeu:

— As Escrituras Sagradas afirmam: “Não ponha à prova o Senhor, seu Deus.”

13 Quando o Diabo acabou de tentar Jesus de todas as maneiras, foi embora por algum tempo.

Jesus começa o seu trabalho na Galileia

Mateus 4.12-17; Marcos 1.14-15

14 Jesus voltou para a região da Galileia, e o poder do Espírito Santo estava com ele. As notícias a respeito dele se espalhavam por toda aquela região. 15 Ele ensinava nas sinagogas e era elogiado por todos.

Jesus em Nazaré

Mateus 13.53-58; Marcos 6.1-6

16 Jesus foi para a cidade de Nazaré, onde havia crescido. No sábado, conforme o seu costume, foi até a sinagoga. Ali ele se levantou para ler as Escrituras Sagradas, 17 e lhe deram o livro do profeta Isaías. Ele abriu o livro e encontrou o lugar onde está escrito assim:

18 “O Senhor me deu o seu Espírito. Ele me escolheu para levar boas notícias aos pobres e me enviou para anunciar a liberdade aos presos, dar vista aos cegos, libertar os que estão sendo oprimidos 19 e anunciar que chegou o tempo em que o Senhor salvará o seu povo.”

20 Jesus fechou o livro, entregou-o para o ajudante da sinagoga e sentou-se. Todas as pessoas ali presentes olhavam para Jesus sem desviar os olhos. 21 Então ele começou a falar. Ele disse:

— Hoje se cumpriu o trecho das Escrituras Sagradas que vocês acabam de ouvir.

22 Todos começaram a elogiar Jesus, admirados com a sua maneira agradável e simpática de falar, e diziam:

— Ele não é o filho de José?

23 Então Jesus disse:

— Sem dúvida vocês vão repetir para mim o ditado: “Médico, cure-se a você mesmo.” E também vão dizer: “Nós sabemos de tudo o que você fez em Cafarnaum; faça as mesmas coisas aqui, na sua própria cidade.”

24 E continuou:

— Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: nenhum profeta é bem-recebido na sua própria terra. 25 Eu digo a vocês que, de fato, havia muitas viúvas em Israel no tempo do profeta Elias, quando não choveu durante três anos e meio, e houve uma grande fome em toda aquela terra. 26 Porém Deus não enviou Elias a nenhuma das viúvas que viviam em Israel, mas somente a uma viúva que morava em Sarepta, perto de Sidom. 27 Havia também muitos leprosos em Israel no tempo do profeta Eliseu, mas nenhum deles foi curado. Só Naamã, o sírio, foi curado.

28 Quando ouviram isso, todos os que estavam na sinagoga ficaram com muita raiva. 29 Então se levantaram, arrastaram Jesus para fora da cidade e o levaram até o alto do monte onde a cidade estava construída, para o jogar dali abaixo. 30 Mas ele passou pelo meio da multidão e foi embora.

Um homem dominado por um demônio

Marcos 1.21-28

31 Então Jesus foi para Cafarnaum, uma cidade da região da Galileia. Ali ele ensinava o povo nos sábados. 32 Eles estavam muito admirados com a sua maneira de ensinar, pois Jesus falava com autoridade. 33 Havia um homem na sinagoga que estava dominado por um demônio. O homem gritou:

34— Ei, Jesus de Nazaré! O que você quer de nós? Você veio para nos destruir? Sei muito bem quem é você: é o Santo que Deus enviou!

35 Então Jesus ordenou ao demônio:

— Cale a boca e saia deste homem!

Em frente de todos, o demônio atirou o homem no chão e saiu dele sem lhe causar nenhum ferimento. 36 Todos ficaram espantados e diziam uns para os outros:

— Que tipo de palavras são essas? Este homem, com autoridade e poder, expulsa os espíritos maus, e eles vão embora.

37 E as notícias a respeito de Jesus se espalharam por toda aquela região.

Jesus cura muita gente

Mateus 8.14-17; Marcos 1.29-34

38 Jesus saiu da sinagoga e foi até a casa de Simão. A sogra de Simão estava doente, com febre alta; e contaram isso a Jesus. 39 Aí ele foi, parou ao lado da cama dela e deu uma ordem à febre. A febre saiu da mulher, e, no mesmo instante, ela se levantou e começou a cuidar deles.

40 Depois de anoitecer , todos os que tinham amigos enfermos, com várias doenças, os levaram a Jesus. Ele pôs as suas mãos sobre cada um deles e os curou. 41 Os demônios saíram de muitas pessoas, gritando:

— Você é o Filho de Deus!

Eles sabiam que Jesus era o Messias, e por isso ele os repreendia e não deixava que falassem.

Jesus anuncia a mensagem

Marcos 1.35-39

42 Quando amanheceu, Jesus saiu da cidade e foi para um lugar deserto. Mas a multidão começou a procurá-lo, e, quando o encontraram, eles não queriam deixá-lo ir embora. 43 Mas Jesus disse:

— Eu preciso anunciar também em outras cidades a boa notícia do Reino de Deus, pois foi para fazer isso que Deus me enviou.

44 E ele anunciava a mensagem nas sinagogas de todo o país.

I want to! Now you are well.

The Preaching of John the Baptist

(Matthew 3.1-12; Luke 3.1-18; John 1.19-28)

1 This is the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 It began just as God had said in the book written by Isaiah the prophet, “I am sending my messenger to get the way ready for you.

3  In the desert someone is shouting, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord!

Make a straight path

for him.’ ”

4 So John the Baptist showed up in the desert and told everyone, “Turn back to God and be baptized! Then your sins will be forgiven.”

5 From all Judea and Jerusalem crowds of people went to John. They told how sorry they were for their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River.

6   John wore clothes made of camel's hair. He had a leather strap around his waist and ate grasshoppers and wild honey.

7John also told the people, “Someone more powerful is going to come. And I am not good enough even to stoop down and untie his sandals. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”

The Baptism of Jesus

(Matthew 3.13-17; Luke 3.21,22)

9 About that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. 10 As soon as Jesus came out of the water, he saw the sky open and the Holy Spirit coming down to him like a dove. 11 A voice from heaven said, “You are my own dear Son, and I am pleased with you.”

Jesus and Satan

(Matthew 4.1-11; Luke 4.1-13)

12 At once God's Spirit made Jesus go into the desert. 13 He stayed there for 40 days while Satan tested him. Jesus was with the wild animals, but angels took care of him.

Jesus Begins His Work

(Matthew 4.12-17; Luke 4.14,15)

14 After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and told the good news that comes from God. 15 He said, “The time has come! God's kingdom will soon be here. Turn back to God and believe the good news!”

Jesus Chooses Four Fishermen

(Matthew 4.18-22; Luke 5.1-11)

16 As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen and were casting their nets into the lake. 17 Jesus said to them, “Follow me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.” 18 Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him.

19Jesus walked on and soon saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat, mending their nets. 20At once Jesus asked them to come with him. They left their father in the boat with the hired workers and went with him.

A Man with an Evil Spirit

(Luke 4.31-37)

21 Jesus and his disciples went to the town of Capernaum. Then on the next Sabbath he went into the synagogue and started teaching. 22 Everyone was amazed at his teaching. He taught with authority, and not like the teachers of the Law of Moses. 23 Suddenly a man with an evil spirit in him entered the synagogue and yelled, 24 “Jesus from Nazareth, what do you want with us? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are! You are God's Holy One.”

25 Jesus told the evil spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” 26 The spirit shook him. Then it gave a loud shout and left.

27 Everyone was completely surprised and kept saying to each other, “What is this? It must be some new kind of powerful teaching! Even the evil spirits obey him.” 28 News about Jesus quickly spread all over Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many People

(Matthew 8.14-17; Luke 4.38-41)

29 As soon as Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went home with Simon and Andrew. 30 When they got there, Jesus was told that Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever. 31 Jesus went to her. He took hold of her hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she served them a meal.

32 That evening after sunset, all who were sick or had demons in them were brought to Jesus. 33 In fact, the whole town gathered around the door of the house. 34 Jesus healed all kinds of terrible diseases and forced out a lot of demons. But the demons knew who he was, and he did not let them speak.

35 Very early the next morning before daylight, Jesus got up and went to a place where he could be alone and pray. 36 Simon and the others started looking for him. 37 And when they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can tell the good news to those people. This is why I have come.” 39 Then Jesus went to their synagogues everywhere in Galilee, where he preached and forced out demons.

Jesus Heals a Man

(Matthew 8.1-4; Luke 5.12-16)

40 A man with leprosy came to Jesus and knelt down. He begged, “You have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.”

41 Jesus felt sorry for the man. So he put his hand on him and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” 42 At once the man's leprosy disappeared, and he was well.

43 After Jesus strictly warned the man, he sent him on his way. 44 He said, “Don't tell anyone about this. Just go and show the priest that you are well. Then take a gift to the temple as Moses commanded, and everyone will know that you have been healed.”

45 The man talked about it so much and told so many people, that Jesus could no longer go openly into a town. He had to stay away from the towns, but people still came to him from everywhere.

A mensagem de João Batista ( Por Marcos)

Mateus 3.1-12; Lucas 3.1-20; João 1.19-28

1 A boa notícia que fala a respeito de Jesus Cristo, Filho de Deus, começou a ser dada 2como o profeta Isaías tinha escrito. Ele escreveu o seguinte:

“Deus disse:

Eu enviarei o meu mensageiro adiante de você para preparar o seu caminho.”

3 E o profeta escreveu também:

“Alguém está gritando no deserto: Preparem o caminho para o Senhor passar! Abram estradas retas para ele!”

4 E foi assim que João Batista apareceu no deserto, batizando o povo e anunciando esta mensagem:

— Arrependam-se dos seus pecados e sejam batizados, que Deus perdoará vocês.

5 Muitos moradores da região da Judeia e da cidade de Jerusalém iam ouvir João. Eles confessavam os seus pecados, e João os batizava no rio Jordão. 6 Ele usava uma roupa feita de pelos de camelo e um cinto de couro e comia gafanhotos e mel do mato. 7 Ele dizia ao povo:

— Depois de mim vem alguém que é mais importante do que eu, e eu não mereço a honra de me abaixar e desamarrar as correias das sandálias dele. 8 Eu batizo vocês com água, mas ele os batizará com o Espírito Santo.

O batismo de Jesus

Mateus 3.13-17; Lucas 3.21-22

9 Nessa ocasião Jesus veio de Nazaré, uma pequena cidade da região da Galileia, e foi batizado por João Batista no rio Jordão. 10 No momento em que estava saindo da água, Jesus viu o céu se abrir e o Espírito de Deus descer como uma pomba sobre ele. 11 E do céu veio uma voz, que disse:

— Tu és o meu Filho querido e me dás muita alegria.

A tentação de Jesus

Mateus 4.1-11; Lucas 4.1-13

12Logo depois o Espírito Santo fez com que Jesus fosse para o deserto. 13Jesus ficou lá durante quarenta dias, sendo tentado por Satanás. Ali havia animais selvagens, e os anjos cuidavam de Jesus.

Jesus começa o seu trabalho na Galileia

Mateus 4.12-22; Lucas 4.14-15; 5.1-11

14 Depois que João foi preso, Jesus seguiu para a região da Galileia e ali anunciava a boa notícia que vem de Deus. 15 Ele dizia:

— Chegou a hora, e o Reino de Deus está perto. Arrependam-se dos seus pecados e creiam no evangelho.

16 Jesus estava andando pela beira do lago da Galileia quando viu dois pescadores. Eram Simão e o seu irmão André, que estavam no lago, pescando com redes. 17 Jesus lhes disse:

— Venham comigo, que eu ensinarei vocês a pescar gente.

18 Então eles largaram logo as redes e foram com Jesus.

19 Um pouco mais adiante Jesus viu outros dois irmãos. Eram Tiago e João, filhos de Zebedeu, que estavam no barco deles, consertando as redes. 20 Jesus chamou os dois, e eles deixaram Zebedeu, o seu pai, e os empregados no barco e foram com ele.

Um homem dominado por um espírito mau

Lucas 4.31-37

21 Jesus e os discípulos chegaram à cidade de Cafarnaum, e, no sábado, ele foi ensinar na sinagoga. 22 As pessoas que o escutavam ficaram muito admiradas com a sua maneira de ensinar. É que Jesus ensinava com a autoridade dele mesmo e não como os mestres da Lei. 23 Então chegou ali um homem que estava dominado por um espírito mau. O homem gritou:

24— O que quer de nós, Jesus de Nazaré? Você veio para nos destruir? Sei muito bem quem é você: é o Santo que Deus enviou!

25 Então Jesus ordenou ao espírito mau:

— Cale a boca e saia desse homem!

26 Aí o espírito sacudiu o homem com violência e, dando um grito, saiu dele. 27 Todos ficaram espantados e diziam uns para os outros:

— Que quer dizer isso? É um novo ensinamento dado com autoridade. Ele manda até nos espíritos maus, e eles obedecem.

28 E a fama de Jesus se espalhou depressa por toda a região da Galileia.

Jesus cura a sogra de Pedro

Mateus 8.14-15; Lucas 4.38-39

29 Logo depois, Jesus, Simão, André, Tiago e João saíram da sinagoga e foram até a casa de Simão e de André. 30 A sogra de Simão estava de cama, com febre. Assim que Jesus chegou, contaram a ele que ela estava doente. 31 Ele chegou perto dela, segurou a mão dela e ajudou-a a se levantar. A febre saiu da mulher, e ela começou a cuidar deles.

Jesus cura muita gente

Mateus 8.16-17; Lucas 4.40-41

32 À tarde, depois do pôr do sol , levaram até Jesus todos os doentes e as pessoas que estavam dominadas por demônios. 33 Todo o povo da cidade se reuniu em frente da casa. 34 Jesus curou muitas pessoas de todo tipo de doenças e expulsou muitos demônios. Ele não deixava que os demônios falassem, pois eles sabiam quem Jesus era.

Jesus anuncia o evangelho na Galileia

Lucas 4.42-44

35 De manhã bem cedo, quando ainda estava escuro, Jesus se levantou, saiu da cidade, foi para um lugar deserto e ficou ali orando. 36 Simão e os seus companheiros procuraram Jesus por toda parte. 37 Quando o encontraram, disseram:

— Todos estão procurando o senhor.

38 Jesus respondeu:

— Vamos aos povoados que ficam perto daqui, para que eu possa anunciar o evangelho ali também, pois foi para isso que eu vim.

39 Jesus andava por toda a Galileia, anunciando o evangelho nas sinagogas e expulsando demônios.

Jesus cura um leproso

Mateus 8.1-4; Lucas 5.12-16

40 Um leproso chegou perto de Jesus, ajoelhou-se e disse:

— Senhor, eu sei que o senhor pode me curar se quiser.

41 Jesus ficou com muita pena dele, tocou nele e disse:

— Sim! Eu quero. Você está curado.

42 No mesmo instante a lepra desapareceu, e ele ficou curado.

43-44 E Jesus ordenou duramente:

— Olhe! Não conte isso para ninguém, mas vá pedir ao sacerdote que examine você. Depois, a fim de provar para todos que você está curado, vá oferecer o sacrifício que Moisés ordenou.

Então Jesus o mandou embora. 45 Mas o homem começou a falar muito e espalhou a notícia. Por isso Jesus não podia mais entrar abertamente em qualquer cidade, mas ficava fora, em lugares desertos. E gente de toda parte vinha procurá-lo.

I would be crazy for not to see that I do not belong to myself, that I do not control my feelings.

I would be crazy not understand that something new came over me and my life.

I would be crazy not to accept everything that I am and have come from God.

In my blindness, I thought I could control what I feel ... to kill a love and to follow my path.

In my incomprehension, I found that my thoughts and discoveries were only merits of my intelligence, logic ... silly pride ....

In my refusal, I found that everything I have was only the fruit of long hours of work.

And who I am ... I have learned from my life and from my courage ... foolish pretense.

I am nothing and no one without my Father ... I am the work of a powerful being and owner of everything we can see, touch and also of what we do not even know exists ...

Today, feeling a pressure in the chest, and a strong lack of air I calm down ... Smile ... with all the agony that my body felt, I was invaded by a peace, and happiness ... At that moment I imagined .. I'm coming home ... I'm sure I did my best .... I did the only thing necessary to give meaning to my life .... I loved it

A mensagem de João Batista

Mateus 3.1-12; Marcos 1.1-8; João 1.19-28

1 Fazia quinze anos que Tibério era o Imperador romano. Nesse tempo Pôncio Pilatos era o governador da Judeia, Herodes governava a Galileia, o seu irmão Filipe governava a região da Itureia e Traconites, e Lisânias era o governador de Abilene. 2 E Anás e Caifás eram os Grandes Sacerdotes . Foi nesse tempo que a mensagem de Deus foi dada, no deserto, a João, filho de Zacarias. 3 E João atravessou toda a região do rio Jordão, anunciando esta mensagem:

— Arrependam-se dos seus pecados e sejam batizados, que Deus perdoará vocês.

4 Isso aconteceu como o profeta Isaías tinha escrito no seu livro:

“Alguém está gritando no deserto: 

Preparem o caminho para o Senhor passar! Abram estradas retas para ele!

5 Todos os vales serão aterrados, e todos os morros e montes serão aplanados.

Os caminhos tortos serão endireitados, e as estradas esburacadas serão consertadas.

6 E todos verão a salvação que Deus dá.”

7 As multidões iam se encontrar com João para serem batizadas por ele. Ele dizia a todos:

— Ninhada de cobras venenosas! Quem disse que vocês escaparão do terrível castigo que Deus vai mandar? 8 Façam coisas que mostrem que vocês se arrependeram dos seus pecados. E não digam uns aos outros: “Nós somos descendentes de Abraão.” Pois eu afirmo a vocês que até destas pedras Deus pode fazer descendentes de Abraão! 9 O machado já está pronto para cortar as árvores pela raiz. Toda árvore que não dá frutas boas será cortada e jogada no fogo.

10 Então o povo perguntava:

— O que devemos fazer?

11 Ele respondia:

— Quem tiver duas túnicas dê uma a quem não tem nenhuma, e quem tiver comida reparta com quem não tem.

12 Alguns cobradores de impostos também chegaram para serem batizados e perguntaram a João:

— Mestre, o que devemos fazer?

13 — Não cobrem mais do que a lei manda! — respondeu João.

14 Alguns soldados também perguntavam:

— E nós, o que devemos fazer?

E João respondia:

— Não tomem dinheiro de ninguém, nem pela força nem por meio de acusações falsas. E se contentem com o salário que recebem.

15 As esperanças do povo começaram a aumentar, e eles pensavam que talvez João fosse o Messias. 16 Mas João disse a todos:

— Eu batizo vocês com água, mas está chegando alguém que é mais importante do que eu, e não mereço a honra de desamarrar as correias das sandálias dele. Ele os batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo. 17 Com a pá que tem na mão, ele vai separar o trigo da palha. Guardará o trigo no seu depósito, mas queimará a palha no fogo que nunca se apaga.

18 João anunciava de muitas maneiras diferentes a boa notícia ao povo e apelava a eles para que mudassem de vida. 19 Mas falou contra o governador Herodes porque ele havia casado com Herodias, a esposa do irmão do próprio Herodes. E também porque ele tinha feito muitas outras coisas más. 20 Então Herodes fez uma coisa ainda pior: mandou pôr João na cadeia.

O batismo de Jesus

21 Depois do batismo de todo aquele povo, Jesus também foi batizado. E, quando Jesus estava orando, o céu se abriu, 22 e o Espírito Santo desceu na forma de uma pomba sobre ele. E do céu veio uma voz, que disse:

— Tu és o meu Filho querido e me dás muita alegria.

The Preaching of John the Baptist

(Matthew 3.1-12; Mark 1.1-8; John 1.19-28)

1 For 15 years Emperor Tiberius had ruled that part of the world. Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was the ruler of Galilee. Herod's brother, Philip, was the ruler in the countries of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was the ruler of Abilene. 2 Annas and Caiaphas were the Jewish high priests.

At that time God spoke to Zechariah's son John, who was living in the desert. 3 So John went along the Jordan Valley, telling the people, “Turn back to God and be baptized! Then your sins will be forgiven.” 4 Isaiah the prophet wrote about John when he said,

“In the desert someone is shouting, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord!

Make a straight path for him.

5 Fill up every valley and level every mountain and hill.

Straighten the crooked paths and smooth out the rough roads.

6 Then everyone will see the saving power of God.’ ”

7   Crowds of people came out to be baptized, but John said to them, “You bunch of snakes! Who warned you to run from the coming judgment? 8 Do something to show that you really have given up your sins. Don't start saying you belong to Abraham's family. God can turn these stones into children for Abraham. 9 An ax is ready to cut the trees down at their roots. Any tree that doesn't produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into a fire.”

10 The crowds asked John, “What should we do?”

11 John told them, “If you have two coats, give one to someone who doesn't have any. If you have food, share it with someone else.”

12   When tax collectors came to be baptized, they asked John, “Teacher, what should we do?”

13 John told them, “Don't make people pay more than they owe.”

14 Some soldiers asked him, “And what about us? What do we have to do?”

John told them, “Don't force people to pay money to make you leave them alone. Be satisfied with your pay.”

15 Everyone became excited and wondered, “Could John be the Messiah?”

16 John said, “I am just baptizing with water. But someone more powerful is going to come, and I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 17 His threshing forkis in his hand, and he is ready to separate the wheat from the husks. He will store the wheat in his barn and burn the husks with a fire that never goes out.”

18 In many different ways John preached the good news to the people. 19 But to Herod the ruler, he said, “It was wrong for you to take Herodias, your brother's wife.” John also said Herod had done many other bad things. 20 Finally, Herod put John in jail, and this was the worst thing he had done.

The Baptism of Jesus

(Matthew 3.13-17; Mark 1.9-11)

21 While everyone else was being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. Then as he prayed, the sky opened up, 22 and the Holy Spirit came down upon him in the form of a dove. A voice from heaven said, “You are my own dear Son, and I am pleased with you.”

But his family went back through Heli, 24Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Jannai, Joseph, 25 Mattathias, Amos, Nahum, Esli, Naggai, 26Maath, Mattathias, Semein, Josech, Joda; 27 Joanan, Rhesa, Zerubbabel, Shealtiel, Neri, 28 Melchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmadam, Er, 29 Joshua, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat, Levi; 30 Simeon, Judah, Joseph, Jonam, Eliakim, 31 Melea, Menna, Mattatha, Nathan, David, 32 Jesse, Obed, Boaz, Salmon, Nahshon;
